I was wondering how safe it actually is to just start taking iron supplements on my own—specifically looking at those Iron 100mg tablets?

Regarding the whole overdose thing, the instructions say something like this: If you accidentally take more than you're supposed to, you should check in with your doctor. Apparently, an overdose doesn't lead to actual poisoning or iron overload because the iron(III) hydroxide polymaltose complex used here isn't in a "free" form within the digestive tract. Basically, the body doesn't just soak it up through passive diffusion.

So, my big question is—if I decide to pop one tablet every single day, even if I don't actually have anemia, could that end up doing me any harm?

Regarding an overdose, the instructions state: If you accidentally take more than the recommended dose, consult your physician. An overdose doesn't actually lead to toxicity or iron overload because the iron(III) hydroxide polymaltose complex doesn't exist in a free form within the digestive tract. The body doesn't absorb it through passive diffusion.

So, if I take one tablet every day, assuming I don't actually have anemia, could it do any harm?

Aside from the fact that it might mess with your stomach, I wouldn't say it'll hurt you. Usually, the recommendation is to take it for three months alongside some Vitamin C.

Regarding an overdose, the fine print says this: If you accidentally take more than the recommended dose, consult your physician. It claims that an overdose won't lead to toxicity or iron overload because the iron in this specific ferric hydroxide polymaltose complex isn't released in a free form within the digestive tract; the body simply doesn't absorb it through passive diffusion.

So, my question is: if I just pop one tablet every single day, assuming I don't actually have anemia, am I going to end up hurting myself?

No, it won't...
But what on earth made you decide to start taking them in the first place?

Sure, iron poisoning is a real thing, but whether you can actually hit that threshold by taking it in this specific form is a whole different conversation.

We’re talking about toxic iron levels, specifically looking at how its hydroxide behaves when it's part of a polymaltose complex. I’m curious—how does the body actually process this stuff metabolically? 🤔
