My doctor recommended I start using Nystatin vaginal suppositories because my discharge has been pretty heavy lately. Like I mentioned in my earlier posts, I’m currently in my 13th week, and on top of everything else I've been dealing with (like the E. coli and the Ampicillin), now I have to add Nystatin into the mix. I did notice the medication guide mentions being cautious when using these during pregnancy, which has me a bit uneasy.

Has anyone here had experience with this? I'm wondering if I might just be overthinking things and being a little too paranoid...

Thanks!

Basically, nystatin doesn't even cross the mucous membrane.

It’s used topically, though sometimes orally for GI tract infections—and if that happens, there's a tiny, tiny chance a negligible dose hits the bloodstream.

Even when taken orally, nystatin is usually labeled Category C risk, whereas for vaginal use, it's considered totally safe, sitting in Category A (controlled studies on humans showed zero risk to the fetus).

Just for comparison, aspirin is Category C during the first and second trimesters, but jumps to Category D in the third.

Here’s another link if you want to dig deeper into how these risk categories actually work:

Don't sweat it 🙂
