Is the "American Dream" just a moving target now?

It feels like every time you finally save up a decent down payment, the goalposts just get moved another mile down the road. I'm starting to wonder if the ladder is actually broken for anyone not already on the top rung. Does anyone else feel like the window of opportunity is slamming shut?
