Issues installing Windows XP?

I'm trying to get Windows XP running on this old laptop because it’s only got 900 MB of RAM to work with, but I'm hitting a wall. I went into the BIOS and switched everything over to IDE mode, but when I start the installation, it hits a massive snag during the formatting stage; it just hangs right around 11%, and sometimes it won't even get past 4%. I've tried a bunch of different XP ISOs, all loaded onto a USB stick, but for some reason, this specific machine just refuses to cooperate. I've actually managed to install Windows 7 and Windows 10 on it before, but let's be honest, they run like absolute garbage on this hardware.
If anyone out there has a clue what might be causing this, I'd really appreciate the help—it's an eMachine laptop.
Just so you know, I made the bootable USB drive using Rufus.

You didn't really give me much to work with here... what's the actual make and model of the laptop you're using? If this is an older machine, we might be looking at a physical issue with the hard drive—especially since you mentioned the installation keeps cutting out. P.S. Are you getting a specific error message or something else?

I ended up fixing the issue by just selecting a quick format during the setup process, and everything seems to be running fine now. I did run a diagnostic on the hard drive first, obviously, because this thing is ancient—it's an eMachines, and honestly, it's struggling with a measly 900 MB of RAM. I actually tried installing Windows 10 just to see if it would take, and while it installed without any issues, the whole thing was painfully slow, so I decided to go back to Windows XP, which runs perfectly fine on this hardware.
