I've got two file types here—Flash video and AVI video. Everything works fine with the Flash video, picture and sound included, but whenever I try playing these AVI files through RealPlayer, I get the video but zero audio. Is this some kind of codec issue?

I tried messing around with the RealPlayer settings, specifically going to Preferences - Media types - Manually configure Media Types for RealPlayer and checking the box for AVI video to make sure it was "assigned" to RealPlayer. Still nothing. No sound. Clearly, that wasn't the fix.

Anyone know what the catch is?

I get the picture, sure, but there's zero sound. Is this some kind of codec issue? Because my Flash video files work perfectly—picture and audio both show up just fine.

I tried messing around in the RealPlayer settings thinking that might fix it, so I went into Preferences - Media types - Manually configure Media Types for RealPlayer and checked the box for AVI Video to make sure it was "assigned" to RealPlayer, but nope, still nothing. Anyone actually know what the catch is here?

just try using different players
Grab the latest version of GOM player or maybe
that combined community codec pack—just install everything and it's already set up for you. With those codecs, you'll end up with Media Player Classic - Home Cinema

and if the video file isn't broken, it should play fine on any AVI player out there. 👍

if the video file itself isn't broken, any AVI player should handle it perfectly👍

Downloaded the first one suggested, GOM, and it worked. At least I have sound now. 👍

Funny enough, all my file icons have changed to look like GOM player icons now—there’s this little footprint icon everywhere. I assume it's tied to the player settings, maybe that "associate files" option. They’re all different colors too: MP4s are green, AVI is orange, FLV is purple. Before this, my Flash video files showed thumbnails, but now they're just GOM icons. Does this mean everything is set to open in GOM now? And can you actually change the icon looks back?

PS: Turns out GOM won't touch MP4 files. Tried it, and it's missing a codec again. RealPlayer handles MP4s just fine, though. Looks like I'll be switching between them.

Does this mean all these files are just gonna open in GOM now? And can I mess with how the icons look?

PS: looks like GOM can't handle MP4s though. Tried it and it's complaining about some missing codec again, but then RealPlayer handles MP4s just fine. Guess I'll be juggling both.

Yeah, whatever icon GOM assigned to that video is what's triggering it to open in GOM, but you can change that if you want🙂

With GOM, different formats usually show up with different colored icons😉

And yeah, I noticed the MP4 issue with GOM too. Just install those codecs I mentioned earlier; the player that comes bundled with them should handle pretty much any format you throw at it👍

GOM handles MP4 files just fine for me—I haven't run into any issues at all. If you're missing the specific GOM codec, the player will usually prompt you with a "Find codec" option right when you try to open the file. Just click that, and it'll guide you through installing whatever it needs to get things running.
If you want to change which program opens certain files by default, you can easily do that by right-clicking the file, selecting properties, and then choosing "Opens with (change)." Alternatively, you can usually manage those settings directly within the program itself.

In my estimation, when it comes to all those more advanced formats, VLC Media Player is really the gold standard. I suppose with it, while you're sitting there watching a movie in one specific format (like .mkv, for instance), you can actually be re-encoding it into an .avi format at the exact same time.

If you want to fix which app handles your files, just right-click the file > properties > Opens with (change), or just mess with the settings inside the player itself.

I used to be able to pull off mp4 playback on older versions too, but apparently the latest version of GOM doesn't support the mp4 format anymore—which is weird, honestly.

If you ask me, VLC Media Player is hands down the king for all those high-end formats. With it, while you're sitting there watching a movie in one format (like .mkv), you can actually re-encode it into something like an avi at the exact same time.

Alright, walk us through it then—how do you turn an MKV into an AVI?
I've been looking everywhere and I seriously don't see that option anywhere.
