Hi there.

I’m running Windows 8.1 on a 64-bit system with 4GB of Microsoft memory.
Lately, my laptop has been acting up—it's just sluggish and takes forever to load things. I checked my computer properties today and noticed that out of my 4GB, only 2.40GB is actually available for use. I realize I can't have the full amount at my disposal, but this feels a bit low. The Windows installation is genuine; it came pre-installed on the machine.

I’ve already run scans with various Antimalware programs and CC Cleaner, but nothing turned up.
Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this? Reinstalling Windows isn't out of the question, but I'd prefer to identify the issue first if there's another tool I should try scanning with. I also checked the hard drive and didn't find any bad sectors.
So far, I've used HitmanPro, Super AntiVirusPro, and Antimalware.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The real issue here is that your laptop uses integrated graphics—which basically means it pulls from your system memory to function—so that’s why your available RAM feels so low. I'm pretty sure you can head into your BIOS settings and manually adjust how much memory is allocated to the graphics card. Maybe that'll give you a bit more breathing room?

Hmm, I'm not so sure about that since it actually has both integrated and dedicated graphics.

And how much system memory did you allocate to the graphics card?

I'm not sure. Could it be an issue if I installed new drivers for both graphics cards, especially the dedicated one?

Maybe. You can also go into the BIOS and manually set how much Microsoft memory gets allocated to the integrated graphics card.

Could I get a little help with that?
How much would be the ideal amount to allocate?
Honestly, what’s really getting to me is that everything was running perfectly just a month or two ago. Now, I'm stuck wondering if this is a hardware issue or just an OS problem...

Well, you should probably dive into the BIOS. Just tap the "Delete" key right when you're booting up and look for the setting that shows how much Microsoft memory is being allocated to the graphics card. If you've got a dedicated GPU, just set it to 32MB and call it a day.

The issue is that I don't see that option in my BIOS.
I read somewhere that on certain laptops, you just can't change this setting.
Here is what it shows me:

total available graphic memory 2508mb
dedicated video memory 1280mb
shared system memory 1228mb

I was reading online that some laptops just won't let you change it at all
It shows up like this

total available graphics memory 2508MB
dedicated video memory 1280MB
shared system memory 1228MB

Are you absolutely sure about that? Honestly, man, I don't know, just hang in there and stay positive!

Take a look at the instructions to see how you can access the BIOS.

I tried following some YouTube tutorials, but when I get into the BIOS, that specific card isn't even listed.

Is that a Gigabyte motherboard?
Maybe try hitting Ctrl+F1 once you’re inside the BIOS—that should unlock the extra tabs for you.

It's a Dell manufactured board.

It's a laptop, not a desktop. And seriously, crimsonharbor313, when you ask for help on any forum, give us more details! More info = better answers.

Roughly speaking, the hardware sounds fine. If it's lagging, grab the free version of CC Cleaner, go to Tools -> Startup, and kill off anything unnecessary that's running in the background. Also, run the Registry cleanup a couple of times—it sometimes needs a few passes to catch everything—and use the Cleaner tool to wipe out junk files and free up some space.

Once you're done with CC Cleaner, download a free defragging tool (like iobit or auslogic) and let it optimize the drive for better data access.

Honestly, if you aren't sure what you're doing, just find someone to walk you through it in person.

Roughly speaking, everything seems fine with the computer, but if things start lagging, just run a scan. CC Cleaner With the free version, just head over to Tools then startup to see which resident programs are running; shut down anything you don't actually need. You should also run the Registry cleaner a few times—it often finds extra junk on the second or third pass—and use Cleaner to wipe out unnecessary files and free up some disk space.

After you run CC, grab a free defrag tool.Ibit., I can't quite make sense of that request. Could you clarify what you need me to write? Then just let the drive defragment—it optimizes the space and streamlines data access.

And if you're feeling unsure about the best way to handle this, don't hesitate to ask someone for some hands-on help in person.

The specs in the original post are clear. I've already run CC Cleaner and defragged the drive; there isn't even 80GB of wasted space left. I rolled back the integrated graphics drivers yesterday, which seemed to help slightly, though I'm still questioning if that was the actual culprit. My main concern now is why such a massive chunk of Microsoft memory is being allocated to the dedicated GPU. I’m going to try reverting to the older graphics drivers next to see if that stabilizes things.

Dell, but which one? It doesn't matter much right now, but it's a good starting point.

CC Cleaner did its thing, disk is defragged, and I don't even have 80GB of usage on it. Yesterday I wiped the new drivers for the integrated graphics and things seem slightly better—not sure if that was actually the issue or not. Now I just want to know why so much Microsoft is being allocated to this dedicated GPU. I'm probably going to try rolling back to the old graphics drivers and see what happens.

Driver Booster, it's a handy little tool for auto-downloading and installing drivers.

Inspiron 3521

I tried that software too. I have a dedicated AMD graphics card, and twice I went to their site to grab drivers only for Windows to crash both times. Even using their own driver detection utility caused a system crash.

Look, I'm checking Google now and it turns out you aren't the only one dealing with these driver installation nightmares on this specific laptop running Win8.
