So, I picked up a $67 new Netgear wireless adapter and plugged it right into my Universal Serial Bus port. I went through the whole drill—installed all the drivers and everything, and at first, it seemed totally fine. But here’s the kicker: whenever I step away from the PC for a few hours and come back, the internet is dead. It turns out the adapter just gets disabled on its own. -.- It’s driving me absolutely insane because I have to physically unplug it and plug it back in just to get back online. I already checked the settings and made sure "allow computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked, so I have no clue what's going on here. Any ideas? Help me out, thanks!🙂

What OS are you running? Driver version? Any other software acting up?

I’m running Windows XP Service Pack 3 with all the latest updates installed, but I honestly can't figure out why my connection keeps dropping. Everything seems totally fine while I'm actually sitting at the computer, but the second I walk away, the adapter just disables itself. I get some kind of diagnostic error popping up in Chrome, and then when I try to jump back online, it forces me to restart the whole connection process. It’s super annoying because nothing else is acting up. Weirdly enough, if I use a wired connection, it stays on perfectly fine—it's just this wireless setup that's being flaky. Maybe it's a power saving thing? I guess we'll see.

Grab the latest driver from the manufacturer's site for your Windows XP 32/64... wipe out the old one, reboot, then just run the new installer.

I went ahead and tried that, but honestly, nothing changed. I'm wondering if it could be because my Windows automatic updates are turned off? Maybe since I haven't installed the latest Windows update, that's causing the issue... I mean, I just messed with the DNS this morning, and for the last 45 minutes, everything’s been running totally fine. I'm getting a steady 36 Mbps, which is excellent, and both my phone and the router are sitting right next to the PC, so there shouldn't be any interference.

Maybe, but Windows XP doesn't get any more updates... they just stopped making them.

I know, but honestly, even this latest one wasn't actually on the computer, I don't know... now, by some weird miracle, nothing is shutting down at all

You mentioned you turned off "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"—did you do that for the USB hub option too, or just for that wireless card?

I only put together the guide for that Netgear A6210 wireless adapter I picked up, unfortunately. I haven't really looked into how you'd go about doing the other one, though maybe there's a way?

I tried that, but I'm still getting the exact same issue 😢. I think I read somewhere that you have to disable Wireless Zero Connect to stop the connection from dropping? Maybe that's the fix?

Right-click the icon for File Explorer -> manager -> Device manager

Look through the device list for the Universal Serial Bus controllers—you'll likely see quite a few items listed there, like hubs and various controllers, I guess.

So, I’ve tried disconnecting everything and resetting things, but it’s the exact same story. After about an hour, the connection just drops out completely. The router seems to be doing its thing just fine, but my PC loses all internet access entirely.

If you can, try plugging the adapter into a different PC—just to rule out whether the issue is actually with the computer or the adapter itself.

Edit: Are other devices working okay on that specific USB port? Like a mouse or a thumb drive, etc.?

I guess I'll go ahead and check that out now

The mouse works fine on that USB port, so I don't think it's an issue with the adapter. It’s brand new, and honestly, I don't trust the computer either since that's also a new build

You probably need to keep it connected for a longer stretch—maybe a few days—to see if there's any actual signal drop-out at some point, if it's an issue with the USB port

I don't really buy that being the issue. I just tried disconnecting my Netgear wireless adapter to see if that might actually do something, maybe it'll help,
