So, I’ve been wondering—what exactly are they pumping into your bloodstream when they hook you up to an IV? What kind of chemical elements or substances are we actually talking about here?

Basically, you’ve got your standard IV base solution—just sterile distilled water mixed with about 9 grams of salt (NaCl) per liter.

It’s pretty easy to tweak it on the fly, too... just toss in some glucose, antibiotics, sedatives, whatever else the situation calls for.

How long can someone actually survive on nothing but an IV drip?

When you first mention an infusion—what's the very first thing that comes to mind? Are we talking about basic saline? Maybe some Ringer's solution or glucose? Or perhaps you're thinking more along the lines of specialized parenteral nutrition formulas?

The label on the IV bag tells you everything—whether it’s saline, glucose, Ringer's, mannitol, or whatever else might be in there. Sometimes, if they've added a specific medication, you'll see it scribbled directly on the bag with a marker.
As for living off an IV long-term? That's a different story entirely. Those are specialized high-calorie solutions that aren't administered through a standard arm IV, but rather via a central venous catheter...
