So, I’m walking through downtown the other day, just minding my own business and checking out some shop windows, when suddenly my heart starts absolutely hammering against my ribs. It felt like this sudden, overwhelming sense of dread—like something terrible was about to go wrong or something totally unexpected was right around the corner. And the thing is, I knew logically there was nothing happening! It actually scared the life out of me. 😲

I mean, I’ve had moments like this before, but usually, I can actually point to a reason for it. Like, if I’m about to run into an old friend I haven't seen in ages, my heart might race because of the nerves, and that makes sense, right?

But this? This was just out of nowhere. Has anyone else ever dealt with this kind of thing? Honestly, I’m starting to get really worried about my health here—and I don't just mean physical stuff, I'm talking about my mental headspace too.

It’s happened before, too, but usually in specific situations where there’s an actual reason—like seeing someone I haven't seen in ages, which makes my heart go crazy.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Honestly, I'm starting to get worried about my health (and maybe my mental health, too).

If you rule out psychological stuff—you know, things like anxiety or panic attacks—then sudden heart palpitations can actually be caused by thyroid issues. That’s often one of the first signs. It’s nothing to freak out over, though; most things are treatable if you catch them.

But if it really is just stress or anxiety, I don't know what to tell you.
Maybe someone here knows a bit more than I do. 🙂

A bodyguard? Seriously? As if that’s the one thing my life is missing right now. 😢

All you're missing is the part where you mention hyperventilating—you know, like you just sprinted a hundred meters—and gasping for air to really complete the whole panic attack starter pack. Assuming, obviously, that there isn't some underlying physical issue going on. If it really is just panic, it’s honestly not the end of the world as long as you start following a few basic rules. Usually, by the time someone actually gets hit by a panic attack, they've already crossed some line regarding stress or exhaustion that their body just can't handle anymore, so this is basically the system's way of venting. It only becomes a real mess if you just ignore all those warning signs and keep grinding at the same pace, because then you're looking at actual risks like a heart attack or a stroke.
The first thing on your list? Slow down. Just... chill out a bit. Lighten up your schedule and definitely find some stuff to do that actually helps you unwind. And most importantly, go see a doctor to rule out anything physical. If everything checks out okay, it might be worth talking to a psychologist—not a psychiatrist, though, because they'll probably just try to hand you a prescription immediately.

Of course, that's assuming there isn't an underlying physical issue. If it really is just panic, it’s nothing to lose sleep over as long as you start following some basic ground rules. Usually, by the time someone gets hit with a panic attack, they've already crossed a line; they've pushed past their limits of stress and exhaustion until the body basically says, "Enough!" and forces a release. It only becomes a serious problem if you keep ignoring those warning signs and try to maintain the same frantic pace, because then you're looking at risks like heart attacks or strokes.
The very first thing you need to do is: slow down. Just... chill out a bit. Thin out your schedule and definitely find some stuff to do that actually relaxes you. And most importantly, go see a doctor to rule out anything physical. If everything comes back clear, it wouldn't hurt to talk to a psychologist—not a psychiatrist, though, because those guys will just try to shove pills down your throat immediately.

I mean, obviously, I'm breathing, it's just that it feels like something is crushing my chest and my heart starts racing like crazy. It's just... pure fear.😕
And honestly, I'm not even under a ton of stress right now; everything is fine. I think I'll go ahead and make a doctor's appointment after all. It just feels so weird. I'm only 21, so who knows what they're going to tell me...

Maybe this might be connected to what we were discussing over in that other thread... I was doing some digging and found some info suggesting there could be a link to the kidneys, especially since she’s dealing with those specific symptoms you mentioned. It mostly seems to come down to some hormonal imbalances...
Could it be blood pressure?

My sex hormones are basically in a coma right now, and honestly, I haven't the slightest clue what's going on with my thyroid. But hey, looks like I'll be getting those answers soon enough. I feel like I’m losing my mind!😠

I’ve always dealt with low blood pressure, but over the last couple of years, everything has just gone completely haywire... I have no idea what's happening, but I seriously need to get to my doctor ASAP!

I've always had low blood pressure, but it’s been acting really weird these last few years... I'm not sure what's going on, but I definitely need to get to my doctor ASAP!

Oh man... you should probably get that thyroid checked out. Other hormones can definitely throw things out of whack, especially if insulin levels are wonky—they seem to be linked somehow...
I actually went to see my doctor mainly because of my thyroid (I found out one of the lobes was slightly enlarged), and they ended up finding this other issue... but I won't know exactly what's happening until the hormone results come back. I get those strange feelings sometimes, too. It's not like my heart is racing or anything, I just feel inexplicably nervous, like there's this constant internal tension. Maybe it's just timing, I guess.
I deal with low blood pressure too.😬

It’s not like my heart is racing or anything, I just feel incredibly jittery and on edge for no reason. Just this constant internal tension. Maybe it's just this stupid weather affecting me.
I struggle with low blood pressure too 😬

Ugh, tell me about it! I get that exact same kind of tension... it's impossible to put into words. Honestly, I've been feeling like this non-stop lately. It's not even like I'm depressed or anything, it's more like this tightness right around my heart. Seriously, at this rate, I'm gonna be spending more time at the doctor's office than in my own living room, just like some old lady!🤣

I hear you... I'm only a few years older than you, so I guess our whole generation—well, they say a generation is about a five-year span—is basically just hitting up doctors left and right. It's rough, honestly. We're starting to feel like those elderly retirees.
I haven't been going for years, but since I'm still finishing up law school, I know I'll eventually move and get married and have to switch doctors, records, and paperwork entirely. So, I figured I'd just go get a full checkup now just to be safe... and look at that.
It’s exactly that—this internal feeling where things just don't feel settled. Just some restlessness or tension, something strange. It isn't sadness or anything specific, just a weird sensation. Maybe that's why.

I get those weird waves of exhaustion and just general irritability too, usually when I'm wiped out, had a few drinks, or haven't eaten anything decent all day.
You think it’s the diet?

Is it really just the diet though?

Honestly, I’ve been being super careful about what I eat lately. I haven't touched a single piece of junk food in over a month because my endocrinologist basically told me I can't afford to put on any weight right now. 😳

But man, this sensation is just so bizarre. Even right now, I'm starting to feel it again... it's not as intense as before, but it's definitely there. 👎

You should definitely check in with a doctor, but I guess working on yourself could help too
Maybe some exercise and maybe even a few relaxation techniques might do the trick

That sounds like it could be a panic attack, which can definitely be triggered by physical issues too... things like an iron deficiency, thyroid problems, or even a lack of B6, which is so important for your nervous system. Or maybe... have you tried stretching your neck? I used to get this weird pressure in my head whenever I stiffened up my neck for no reason, and it would trigger this intense fear that made my heart race... Honestly, a little massage and keeping the stress levels down can work wonders! 👍

Honestly, it looks more like a panic attack to me, and I’m pretty sure it’s purely psychological in nature.
I actually deal with those kinds of episodes myself, though I’ve gotten pretty good at managing them by now. My body usually does a decent job of masking it so nobody notices on the outside, while on the inside, I’m just kind of muttering to myself like, "Oh, here we go again," and then it passes in a few minutes.
But man, I know keeping all that under wraps isn't exactly easy, so if you feel like it's starting to throw you off your game, maybe look into getting some professional help.

I'm right there with you—totally signing off on that. 👋

And as for doctors—honestly, my primary care physician hasn't seen me since I was in high school! 😬 🙄 😬

It sounds like a panic attack, unfortunately. My best advice is to try not to let the fear itself take over, because being afraid of the fear is what really creates that vicious cycle—you just end up spinning in circles, and it becomes overwhelming. If you feel one coming on, just remember that it will pass. Try this: inhale while counting to five, hold that breath for a few seconds, and then exhale for as long as you possibly can (try to empty your lungs completely if you can). Repeat that a few times. It really does help, believe me! And if you get the chance, I’d highly recommend sitting down with a good psychologist to talk things through.

Please, spare me the psychology talk. This is just a panic attack, plain and simple. It’s something I’ve been dealing with constantly lately. Look, the most important thing is that when it hits, you don't let the panic take over. 🙂Just try to relax and breathe deep. For me, meditation and talking things through did the trick. My boyfriend really stepped up, too—whenever I started getting restless, I’d just talk to him, describe exactly what was happening to me, and he truly helped me through it.

People are naturally terrified of the unknown and anything they can't quite grasp. But honestly? Every time one of these attacks happens, it's just an opportunity to get to know it, to study it...

Don't sweat it. Most people go through this; they just don't talk about it. Don't think you're crazy or anything like that. It's perfectly normal. And I'm certain you'll get past this, because you're much tougher than some basic fear. 😍
