If the soul isn't some physical organ you can point to, then why do these emotions hit with such visceral, physical pain?
I’m 26 now, and I've started noticing that everything—sadness, heartache, whatever—feels so much more intense than it used to. It’s like the volume has been turned up on my entire emotional spectrum. For instance, I find myself feeling the absence of people much more acutely lately.
Sometimes, I honestly get this sinking feeling that one day I just won't be able to take it anymore—that I'll simply reach a breaking point and snap.
I’m curious how you all experience this—do you feel these waves hitting you as frequently as I do? Or have I just lost my mind a little?
Is it just a "young person" thing where feelings hurt more, or does it actually get heavier and more intense as you get older?

Love,
🙂

Where does pain settle? It marks the onset of aging, the process of maturing—which is really just the dulling of our senses and an emotional fading, or essentially, death itself. As long as you feel pain, you know you’re still alive. Pain is one of the vital indicators of life's intensity and the restless energy of being.

I don't see how growing older has anything to do with the pain actually stopping.

The pain never really goes away; you just get better at managing it as the years pass. Hang in there, briskbison70. 👋

"Everything feels effortless when you're young... even the wounds don't sting quite as much..."

There is a certain truth to that sentiment. When you're in your youth, you don't feel the weight of things as heavily because you're simply existing in the moment—moving from today to tomorrow without a second thought. You live for the immediate present; you aren't burdened by foresight. You possess a sort of natural stoicism. For instance, if you're sixteen and you fall in love, only to be replaced by someone else, it hurts, but it passes. But if that same thing happens when you're twenty-six? You find yourself spiraling into existential dread, wondering if you'll spend the rest of your life alone, if you'll ever find a partner, or if you'll ever start a family. The stakes feel infinitely higher.

You only get one shot at being young.🙂

It’s almost like those old wounds never truly close up all the way, and then some new experience comes along and just rips them wide open again, making everything hurt so much more intensely than it did before.

Look, if you’re feeling pain, then you’re actually feeling it in your soul. It’s those raw emotions that drive us straight toward the hurt. Honestly, being totally numb is just a bad way to live—if you aren't feeling anything, you're basically just walking around sad and hollow. You can't see a soul because, well, there isn't one you can touch, but you feel these sensations because you're a good person... at the end of the day, feelings are pretty much the only thing we really have left in this crazy world...
Cherish those heavy moments when you're down, because that's the only way you'll truly appreciate how incredible it feels when things finally turn around and you're happy again...

Honestly, this is just complete nonsense🙂 I mean, if you really think about it, maybe the only actual thing that sets us apart from animals is that we don't use our tongues to clean ourselves...🙏

Does the heartache just hurt while you're young, or does it actually get more intense as you get older?

Honestly, I don't think things necessarily "get better," but I do think life just gives you a whole new menu of ways to feel miserable... Like, one year you're gutted because you lost one specific person, and then years later, it's a totally different kind of void because someone else is gone. You know what I mean? I feel like as time passes, you just end up learning all these different flavors of sadness and how to navigate them, so maybe we eventually get better at carrying the weight of it all.
