Keyboard issues

I really need some help here. I spilled water all over my keyboard and now it’s acting completely haywire. Some keys won't even register, and others are typing the wrong letters... If I just go out and grab a new one, will that fix everything automatically? Thanks!

Also, could you guys recommend a decent keyboard? Just something basic, maybe around $67? I’d really like one with at least a 2-year warranty.

An external keyboard instead of just the laptop one?

Yeah, once liquid hits those contacts, they go totally haywire just like you described—plus some keys start acting like machine guns, just firing off bursts on their own.

Most keyboards can be popped open, so you can pull the keys and scrub the contacts; I actually did a deep clean on mine a couple of weeks ago. Most of them have at least some kind of spill protection too, so hopefully, not all the liquid hits the actual circuitry.

You could try fixing the laptop keyboard itself, but man, that’s a massive headache to tear down.

The sooner you strip it down and clean it, the less chance you have of corrosion eating the contacts. You'll probably need some isopropyl alcohol (regular rubbing alcohol leaves nasty residue) and maybe a microfiber cloth.

I don't even know if I could put it all back together 😂 I just grabbed a cheap one, but hey, at least it has a 36-month warranty. Thanks!

I'm guessing you already tried drying out the keyboard?

Oh, please! I’m going to give it a shot right now, even though it looks so wild that I honestly think it might be a lost cause.

Just separate the films and wipe down the contacts... then let the top plate with the keys just sit there and dry for a day or two (unless you want to pop the keys off to speed up the drying process before putting them back where they belong).
Watch out when you put back that conductive rubber strip sitting between the film contact and the electronic board. That little strip works by alternating between conductive and non-conductive sections—there's like fifty of those tiny layers packed into those few centimeters—so try not to get any grease from your fingers on it.
