Hey there,
So, here’s the deal: I need to swap out the keyboard on my HP ProBook 4540. I was thinking about just grabbing a replacement off eBay and DIY-ing the whole thing. Local shops around here are quoting me $83 at the very least, which is honestly a joke. I found these listings online where you can get the bare keyboard without the frame for like $16, or the full assembly with the frame for about $50. My plan was to snag the cheap one, pry the old frame off, and transplant it onto the new board. I was even thinking about peeling the letters off the old keys and sticking them onto the new ones to keep it looking familiar.
Is that actually doable, or am I just asking for a headache? Any other weird little things I should watch out for before I dive in? Thanks.

If you've got a service manual or a full walkthrough video handy, all you really need is a steady hand and some patience 😁

Yeah, that’s pretty much where my head was at too. I think I'm gonna give it a shot.

Just one little bit of advice from my limited experience tinkering with laptops—be really careful not to damage the ribbon cable connecting the keyboard to the chassis. That’s easily the most fragile part of the whole setup.

This might be a bit tricky depending on the keyboard layout. Some setups don't play nice when you try to pop the keys off. It’s usually fine to pull them out, but getting them back in can be a total pain 😬

Do yourself a favor and check YouTube first—there’s definitely a tutorial out there. On some laptops, swapping keys is a breeze, but on others, you practically have to gut the entire machine just to reach them, so watch your step. If yours is one of those nightmare models, just take your time and snap photos of everything with your phone so you actually remember how it all goes back together 😬

Hey everyone, I’ve got a Dell Inspiron 15 where a few keys have stopped working, so I'm looking at a replacement. Does anyone have a rough idea of what a repair shop might charge for something like this?

I was browsing eBay and spotted a keyboard for about $60 that includes the standard US layout. My only hesitation is that the listing mentions compatibility with the Dell Inspiron 15 version, even though mine is the slightly different model. Visually, they look identical and all the small details seem to line up, so I'm assuming it'll fit perfectly.

I'm just trying to figure out the best move here. Is it worth paying a local shop to handle the part and the install, or should I just do it myself? I've heard service fees can be way higher than ordering online, but if the price gap isn't massive, I'd much rather just drop it off at a pro and get it sorted quickly.
