Hey,
I picked up a laptop running Linux and I can't install a single piece of software without an authorization password. I never even set one up myself. What am I supposed to do?

The easier route? Just call the retail shop where you picked up the laptop and ask them for the default password.

My recommendation? Just wipe the drive, install Linux, and start fresh. When the installer prompts you for credentials, go ahead and set up a custom password of your choosing. You’re looking at maybe twenty minutes of work tops, assuming everything goes smoothly.

That’s fine in theory, I suppose—but you have to create a bootable USB or disc first, and let's be honest, that isn't exactly a walk in the park for everyone.
