Merging new threads into mega-threads

I honestly don't get why the rule here is to just dump every new topic into these massive, sprawling threads about some specific subject. Point of Interest—I posted about some issues I was having with my electric bills in the Housing section, and the whole thing just got moved straight into the Duke Energy thread.

Not only is it a total nightmare to navigate, but—as mentioned in the admin log in the third post—these giant threads with over 10k posts actually bog down the servers. Which makes sense, I guess, since forums are usually built to handle tons of different topics rather than thousands of replies in one single thread. Plus, it basically kills the search function. Like, if someone is looking for info on power bills, they have to dig through this endless Duke Energy saga just to see if anything actually applies to them. If we kept things in separate threads, they could just scan the titles from their search results and find what they need instantly.

If there’s really that much discussion happening on one subject, a better move would be to just create a dedicated sub-forum for it instead of cramming everything into one thread. Right now, we just have this huge pile of posts that's pretty much useless to everyone—nobody's reading it except maybe the very first and last few messages—and it's just eating up space and causing lag.

If you use the advanced search feature, you can actually toggle an option to pull up individual posts that contain a specific word or phrase.

Yeah, but that’s exactly the headache—sifting through random single posts from massive threads. It’d be way easier if the thread title itself told you whether there was actually anything useful inside. I mean, you can't seriously expect people to dig through 10,000 posts just because every tenth one mentions something like Duke Energy bills (which means you're still looking at 1,000 results).

It’s obvious that both humans and bots struggle with this setup, so I really don't see why we're throwing everything into the same pile.

Edit: And let's not forget how search results get cluttered with stuff from other threads too—then you're basically searching for a needle in a haystack.

If I’m reading this right, your post actually got moved into a thread that’s only about 20 pages deep rather than 500, so it shouldn't be a problem to track down at all!

What does that even have to do with anything? I'm talking about future users who’ll be looking for answers to stuff we've already covered—not just me being selfish. I found my own post and I know exactly where it is, and honestly, I don't think it even belongs there... it makes it look like I'm just some guy constantly hijacking threads.

Besides, my question was about how things actually work. Why do this? There’s zero upside to it, seriously.

And don't even get me started on how some threads are years old, filled with info that isn't just outdated—it’s ancient history—yet new replies keep piling on top.

Cramming everything into one massive thread is counterproductive, nonsensical, and honestly, just repulsive for anyone actually using this forum. But hey, it’s clearly just easier for the mods. It's pure laziness, and it completely trashes the site's organization.

It’s a mindless practice. I haven't seen anything like it on any major US forum I've ever joined.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if this constant System Error we've been seeing lately is a direct result of that exact kind of stupidity.

Is there any way we could actually add a link like that if a user asks for it?

While I've got your attention, I wanted to toss out a quick question about deleted posts.



Is it possible to have an automated system leave a note where a deleted message used to be, just stating that the admins cleared it out?

If that's not an option, could we maybe allow a user to request that such a note be left behind in place of their deleted content?
