Hello,

I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows 8—and lately, my touchpad has stopped working properly—specifically the scrolling feature when I'm browsing the web or moving through different Word documents. Does anyone know how to fix this?

On top of that, I bought a new Logic World mouse to deal with the first issue, and now—to make matters worse—even that isn't working. I've heard that some mice just don't play nice with Windows 8... but since I already tossed the old one out, I can't exactly swap it back. :-(

1. What about drivers for the touchpad?
2. Any word on USB or mouse drivers?
3. Should I run Windows updates?

Wait, are you having trouble getting the scroll wheel to work on your mouse, or what? Because I’ve definitely been in that spot before where the scrolling just dies on the touchpad, but even without specific drivers, the mouse wheel should still behave normally, right? It's like, sure, you might lose some fancy extra buttons or custom macros, but basic scrolling ought to just work!

Take a quick look at your Device Manager and see if there are any yellow exclamation marks popping up there.

My touchpad drivers and Windows updates are all current—nothing left to install there. As for that stubborn mouse... I can't find any drivers for it anywhere. And strangely enough, nothing is showing up with an error icon in Device Manager.😕

Think back to what you were doing right before everything went sideways... I mean, if your radio was working perfectly fine and then suddenly just quit on you, we're probably looking at either a nasty virus or some buggy Windows update that totally trashed your settings

First things first, run a deep scan for malware, and then head over to Windows Update to see if there's anything pending related to your hardware

I'm not entirely sure what went wrong, but I think I figured it out. Reinstalling the Synaptics drivers did the trick—the touchpad is finally back online. I still don't quite grasp why my new mouse isn't supported by Windows 8, but it was just a $13 so it's not a huge deal. Thanks for the help.

Wait, what do you mean it doesn't "support" a mouse? Like, how does that even work? No matter which way you turn it, the scroll wheel should function... I mean, any basic mouse should just work, right?

I've got a strong feeling you picked up some cheap, no-name junk that cost like $13, so honestly, can you really be surprised when it acts up? Next time, just grab a decent, reliable mouse from a real brand. Anyway, I'm seriously glad you got everything sorted out, especially since it sounds like the OS wasn't actually the culprit here.

Windows 8.1.1 is hands down the best Winsi ever released. I've never run into a single issue with it, unless I totally mess something up myself.
