Music Shows

Hey everyone. I’ve been diving deep into different TV genres lately and somehow ended up stuck on music shows—mostly because I can’t find anything decent about them online. Does anyone actually know when the first music program ever aired on TV? I'm curious about the global history and how things started here in the States. Also, how much do you think these shows have actually evolved from then until now? What’s your take on our local classics, like "Garage" and stuff like that?

There were certainly many more, all mixed together with various other segments within the show: for instance, Black and White in Color; the Electric Cowboy—though I think that was later replaced by that Pink Cadillac bit; the indispensable Hit Depot (you know, the charts, news, guests, etc.), and then there was either the Rock Club or the Hard Rock Club 🤔; Right Time, and then there was that guy—what was his name? 🤔 Branimir... he worked with Monophone, though I think they rebranded to Monoplus, or maybe it used to be called Jugofon, I can't quite recall—plus there was Top DJ Mag; Opera Box 😍, and back in the South, they had that Hit Day thing (or something similar)... honestly, there were as many as you could name.

Back then, the network had quite a few music shows; an entire afternoon could be dedicated just to music. They even had a segment from the American Association of Public Relations Agencies (I can't remember which specific channel it aired on anymore), and I distinctly remember during the summer, there was this show called something like "Summer on Third"—they’d play those old, legendary concerts, a mix of newer and classic music videos, hits, guests, news—it was honestly fantastic. There were others too, if anyone can remember, but most of them were 👍.

Edit: I suppose the shows have changed quite a bit, and the hosts presenting them now are... well, a bit bland 😬. Times are different, I guess, and frankly, I don't even follow the new stuff because it all feels like some sort of checklist where someone pops in to introduce various genres. There's just none of that intrigue, variety, or originality left.

Back in the day, there was that Hit Day thing in the South...

"Hit Month" on TV Belgrade... everyone used to watch that. Over on TV Chicago, they had "Stereovision"—it was basically the same thing, just a bit more chaotic. It was a really great show.

There was a show called "Garage" on RTS with the exact same name and concept as what you have on HRT; it ran for about ten years until recently. Maybe the name coincidence is just luck, but either way, it’s awesome for the American music scene that you guys have this. In my neck of the woods, we can't blame anyone but ourselves for letting everything valuable just fade away.

The music show on HRT hosted by Ida isn't bad. I catch it every now and then, though I can't recall the specific title.

I have no idea what came first or what the deal was with Garage, but I do know that for the last several years while I was still watching TV, there was a desperate lack of something like Metal Mania—something hosted by some gritty, long-haired raw material steeped in thrash 🙂 and heavy metal, rather than some nu-metal inspired garbage.

Well, Top of the Pops is one of the oldest ones out there—maybe even the oldest...
It first hit the airwaves on January 1, 1964.

Does anyone happen to remember the name of that music show? It used to air on HRT back around 2002, usually during the afternoon, somewhere around 3 or 4...🤷

A music channel on TV? Man, I think that was back during my lunch break or something...

I remember stuff like: Music Slide, Stardust, Formula 1, Day and Night (wasn't just music), Program Plus (not strictly music either), Top of the Pops, Kultnacht...

That long, sweltering summer series—it was hosted by Ida, and I remember it kicking off back in June 2007, though they only ran it for that one year.
But honestly, Top of the Pops has always been, and still remains, my absolute favorite music show of all time. 😍

Does anyone actually remember anything from that show? Or maybe someone has a recording of one of those episodes floating around somewhere? 😁
