Greetings, I am currently in the process of sourcing various components and find myself quite uncertain, so I was hoping to solicit some opinions and perhaps a bit of guidance regarding my purchase. I am attempting to assemble a PC specifically for gaming purposes.

I find myself somewhat indecisive between two different processors:
1) Intel Core i5-4460
2) AMD FX 8320

Furthermore, I am encountering a bit of a dilemma when it comes to selecting an appropriate graphics card:
1) ASUS GeForce GTX 750 Ti
2) XFX Radeon R9 380

Regarding the other hardware I have already set aside, I possess
A power supply—specifically a Kingston DDR3 HyperX Fury
1x Kingston DDR3 HyperX Fury, 1866MHz, 8GB

In addition to those items, I still require a motherboard that is compatible with whichever processor and graphics card you might suggest would be the more cost-effective choice for me.

I thank you all in advance for any responses you might provide. 😁

What kind of budget are you working with for the rest of the build? It's possible that none of these options represent the best value once you factor in the cost of all your other components

I'm looking at about $3,700 for the whole setup, excluding the power supply, the case, and whatever Newegg drives I end up picking out.

Given the power supply situation, I don't think you could really overclock that AMD FX enough to match or even get close to the i5.

MSI Radeon R9 380
Intel Core i5-4460
Gigabyte GA-B85M-D2V motherboard

$1200 Amazon

I can't find any specific specs on that power supply, but it looks at least 7 or 8 years old. Personally, I wouldn't trust something like an MSI Radeon R9 380 on a unit that aged. I'd rather just swap it out entirely and have some peace of mind.

It’s a 420W on the 12V rail—pretty much mid-range stuff from about five or six years ago. I suppose that might be something worth swapping out eventually.

EDIT:

The CPU and GPU are basically sucking up all the power on that 12V rail since they're the heavy hitters here, along with some of the Newegg drives and fans (which doesn't really matter)... so, yeah, 420W.😛

So, I suppose you're thinking that wouldn't actually be enough? 😢

No, strictly speaking in terms of numbers, it’s actually quite decent. It puts out a solid amount of power on the 12V rail. The only real question is how old it is and whether you can actually trust it to hold up.

If it's running fine, just leave it alone. If you're looking to cut down on power consumption, swap that 380 out for an NVIDIA GTX 960 instead. click

If you ask me, I’d definitely go with a new power supply.

EVGA 400W, 12cm fan,
Intel Core i5-4460 (3.20GHz, 1MB, 6MB, 84 W, 1150) Box
Gigabyte GTX 950
Gigabyte GA-H81M-S2V

$1233

I'd say go for the new power supply. It’s been running for quite a while now, and those things tend to lose their edge over time, I guess.

Go with the i5 4460 and the R9 380. You won't find a better GPU in that price range, and that GTX 1050 you mentioned won't even hit half the performance of this Radeon card. Also, definitely upgrade your power supply. You need something around 500 watts; here is an Antec option from Best Buy ( https://www.bestbuy.com/site/power-supply-units/antec-500w-power-supply/ ). As for the motherboard, that’s up to you. Since you aren't using an overclockable processor, you don't need to worry about Z97 boards. H97 boards have everything a Z97 offers except for overclocking support—meaning they still support RAID, offer plenty of USB 3.0 and SATA 3 ports, and most include an M.2 slot. For instance, the ASUS H81M-K that Sandra Gomez mentioned is one of the cheapest, most basic options, and you'll likely be fine with it. However, if you have a case like mine with USB 3.0 ports, you won't be able to use them because that board only has two USB 3.0 ports on the back. If you want to use those front-panel USB 3.0 ports, a GA-H81M-D2V would be a better fit. Note that both of these motherboards only have two RAM slots, so your single 8GB stick leaves you with just one slot for an upgrade. If you want four slots, you'll probably need to look at a B85 board like the GA-B85M-DS3H. Ultimately, you'll have to decide based on your specific needs and, of course, the different price points for each board.
