So, last Thursday I took what I think was a hard kick from a cleat while playing soccer—honestly, I can't even remember if someone actually hit me or if I just tweaked something bad. A day later, this bruise popped up under my left ankle, and then this little swelling started forming on the bottom of my foot, right between the ankle and the heel. Since I could walk around with barely any pain, I figured it wasn't a huge deal and just kept slathering some gel on it. I could move my ankle pretty normally the whole time too.

I finally went to see my primary care doctor today. He wrapped my ankle up and told me I have to keep it taped for seven days, plus take it easy for another two weeks—basically, stay off the soccer field. The pain is super minimal; I only really feel it if I put all my weight on that left leg. But seriously, what is this? Is it just a sprain? Did I go and mess up my ligaments or my joint because I didn't wrap it right immediately? It’s not swollen anymore, just that one bruise.

When can I get back out there for my amateur league games? And how should I jump back into training? Was this from the actual impact, or did I just land wrong without realizing it during the game? I'm honestly worried it might be something more serious and that I'll just reinjure myself the second I start sprinting again.

Thanks in advance for the advice! 🙂 🙂

Since I could walk with pretty much zero pain, I figured it wasn't a big deal and just kept applying some topical gel. I could move the ankle around fairly normally, too.

I finally saw my primary care doctor today, who just wrapped my ankle in a compression bandage and told me I need to keep it wrapped for seven days, then take another two weeks off from soccer entirely. It barely hurts—the only slight discomfort is when I shift my full weight onto my left leg. But seriously, what is this? Is it just a sprain?

When can I get back on the pitch (I play amateur indoor and outdoor)? And how should I ease back into training? Was this from a direct impact, or did I just land wrong without realizing it during the game? I’m worried it might be something more serious that'll just flare up again the moment I start sprinting.

Thanks in advance for any advice 🙂 🙂

I mean, excuse my language, but what kind of incompetent doctor fails to explain what's actually happening? They're supposed to give you a diagnosis, you know. If you're genuinely worried—and honestly, I would be—here’s my advice: get an X-ray. You need imaging. Go back to your doctor, ask for a referral, and just get it done so you can stop stressing. Second, until the pain is completely gone—regardless of how you're standing—just rest. No training, period. And please, don't go popping painkillers just so you can play; have you not heard about those players who use stuff like Voltaren to mask the pain only to collapse on the field? Just get the scan done, and if you don't want to rush back to some doctor who can't give you a straight answer, just get a second opinion. It's not like you can't switch doctors these days. Good luck, heal up fast, and maybe score a goal for me while you're at it...🙂
