Neighbors (2014)

Neighbors is the upcoming release from Point Grey Pictures—the same production house behind this year's massive comedy hit, This Is the End. The story centers on a young married couple moving into a new home with their newborn, only to find themselves living right next door to a fraternity led by Zac Efron. The cast is quite the ensemble, featuring names like Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, David Francia, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. It’s set to premiere in the USA on May 9, 2014, where it will likely go head-to-head at the box office against Robert Downey Jr.'s new comedy "Chef" and yet another project from Tyler Perry. Nicholas Stoller is taking the helm as director.

I've seen plenty of movies about frat houses, but I've never actually seen regular folks move in next door to them 😂

Caught this last night—honestly, such a blast. It’s got a bit of a slow burn at the start, but once things really kick into gear, it’s gold. What I loved most, and what feels like a rare find these days, is how the jokes actually escalate. Most comedies just fizzle out or throw random stuff at you, but here, the laughs get bigger and sharper as the movie progresses. Zac Efron is great, even if he's not exactly my cup of tea, and David Francia holds his own. Rose Byrne was a total surprise to me too, since I haven't seen Bridesmaids, and Seth Rogen is just being his classic self. Definitely worth a watch if you need a laugh.🙂

On another note, I wanted to bring this up: the film pulled in $50 million over its opening weekend. That’s one of the strongest starts we've seen for an R-rated comedy in a long time. You can see all the details right here:

Ultimately, most of the film's punchlines are already front-loaded into the trailer—much like a toddler discovering a condom on the doorstep (though one wonders which parent would actually let their child play in a dumpster). Consequently, there isn't much left to surprise anyone. Serious moments are virtually non-existent, and when they do surface, they are given such fleeting screen time between bouts of cartoonish absurdity that they feel like nothing more than hollow clichés. It is quite a missed opportunity; Neighbors had the potential to be a sophisticated, well-constructed comedy with a legitimate underlying subtext. That failure can be attributed both to the clumsy direction, which prioritizes blaring, obnoxious songs over almost everything else, and to a script by two newcomers that feels amateurish, recycled, and entirely predictable. If you aren't in the mood to leave your brain at the door, I suggest skipping this one. You will likely find yourself merely irritated by the sheer volume of stupidity.

After watching That Awkward Moment, this is actually the second comedy I've checked out featuring Zac Efron. Honestly, I really enjoyed both of them—they just hit the spot. I actually caught Neighbors in theaters, which made the whole experience so much better; I was laughing my head off, there were just so many genuinely funny bits in there. 🤣

Honestly, this was a pretty solid comedy, I definitely had some good laughs at certain points. Seth Rogen was awesome as usual, and I guess Zac Efron doesn't even get on my nerves the way he used to; he’s actually become a decent actor, I suppose.

I’ll be honest, after watching the trailer, I was fully expecting this to be a total disaster, but I was actually pleasantly surprised👍 It’s a genuinely great comedy, and the entire cast absolutely nails it.🙏🙏

To movie was an absolute disaster. I think I managed to laugh maybe three times at most.
The shots were pointless, filled with constant swearing and partying, yet lacking any actual direction or purpose.

Pretty disappointing, honestly. I was expecting a lot more from this. There aren't any standout, hilarious moments, and some parts actually just grate on my nerves because the characters keep rambling on with these pointless, endless dialogues. As far as I can tell, 22 Jump Street is probably the best comedy released so far this year.
