New CPU upgrade

Hey there.

My son’s PC for gaming uses an i5-6400, but I guess lately a lot of newer games have been flagging it, saying the processor just isn't quite up to par anymore.

Does anyone have any ideas on which processor I should grab to get a decent upgrade?

Maybe 16 GB of DDR4 RAM? I guess that could work.

No way an i5-6400 is too weak for this game.

Must be some software glitch or something else entirely.

What exactly is the error message, and which game are we talking about?

Are you dealing with lag during gameplay or just getting hit with a random error code?

Or maybe the kid just wants a new processor and tells his old man the current one is total garbage. 😁

It’s not really that the game itself is stuttering, it’s more that when I check the specs for something like FIFA 19, everything shows up as "good" performance—like my GPU and RAM—but then it flags my processor as "bad."

Is everything running okay in the game? I doubt your CPU is actually bottlenecking you, especially for something like Konami. These benchmarks are pretty amateur hour—instead of measuring actual processing power, they just pull some numbers and compare them, which doesn't even come close to showing how the CPU really performs. It's kind of pointless, I guess.

Games look at core counts and base clocks or whatever, but honestly? It's total bullshit.

You can run the latest, most demanding titles on that processor, let alone Konami games.

I recall a specific instance when I was testing a laptop using a demo version of either FIFA 18 or FIFA 19. At that time, the processor was a slightly less powerful i5-6300HQ. Even though I had the game running at maximum settings with Full HD resolution and a steady 60 fps, the software insisted that the hardware was insufficient, specifically claiming there wasn't enough RAM available.

There's at least a 33% difference between those two.

I wouldn't blame the CPU. Honestly, an i5-6300HQ is plenty beefy enough to run Konami games on max settings without breaking a sweat.
It’s a bit of a stretch, but there's a good chance his PC is just overheating. If he's thermal throttling, that processor probably won't even push past 2.7GHz.

That built-in evaluation tool in Konami games is pretty useless. For all intents and purposes, the game should run perfectly fine for you—just crank up the settings and lock your FPS to 60Hz, 75Hz, or whatever your monitor supports.

Don't take those in-game performance warnings too seriously.
That rig is plenty for both old and new games. Depending on what you're playing, you can easily run things on medium or even high settings.
