So I'm looking to grab a new PSU and an HDD...

My current setup:
motherboard - ASUS B85M Pro3
CPU - i3 4170
GPU - EVGA RX 560 2GB OC
RAM - 8GB DDR3
old PSU - PowerEdge Core edition 450 w
old HDD - Seagate BarraCuda 500GB

The rest of my parts are pretty recent, but the power supply and hard drive have been running for almost 6 years now... Just want some peace of mind and better data security. Plus, my current PSU has started making this weird crackling noise (probably just a factory defect), so I'm looking for something quiet and reliable to make me happy, haha...

I don't plan on upgrading anything later, I just need stuff that works well with what I already have... I'd like a 1TB drive... Keeping it budget-friendly is key, but nothing total junk, if you know what I mean...

Any shop is fine... Thanks...

Seagate BarraCuda 1 TB. Looks like it’s seen some things $133
EVGA Hyper 500w, roughly $133

crimsonstag84, hey, give me the lowdown—is the HEXA actually better than the Hyper? Like, what kind of wattage are we really looking at here?
And is it any quieter than the Hyper?
I’m planning on picking up a new rig next year, so I figured I’d start asking questions now just to get my head around things.

Personally, I think the EVGA CX450M beats both of them, plus you get modularity.

And there's a 5-year warranty, just like the HEXA!

$155

Or maybe something like this:

That 30dB noise level seems pretty quiet to me.

How big of a deal is the difference between 7200rpm and 5400rpm drives?

As for the power supply, could I get away with something even cheaper or lower wattage? It doesn't even need to be quiet—honestly, anything will sound silent compared to that buzzing/dying one I had before... 😁

I settled on using Micro Center for this build, so if you feel like browsing, here are my top picks from their site: www.microcenter.com

It's significant enough to notice, and honestly, they cost about the same anyway.

crimsonstag84, that's hardly a bargain.

Honestly, the old Hexa is plenty for his build—he won't run into any issues, yet he's out here hunting for "cheaper" options.

I wouldn't go any lower than that.

He didn't really say much 😛 Still, you get a 5-year warranty, so I guess it's better than the Hyper anyway.

Basically $33 cheaper, uh, if it's actually tough and high quality enough (is it though?) - then I'm grabbing it... And if I end up waiting 5 years (thinking about that warranty) before getting a new rig, then screw it all...

He’s asking for something even weaker and cheaper, whatever that actually means.

Now he can grab a Classic Hex for around $50, a new Hex for about $60, or a Corsair CX450M for $155.

Each one gets the job done and is worth the price tag. Honestly, they're probably the best bets at those price points.

P.S.

You won't have any issues picking up that Hex for around $45.
Your rig pulls about 200W at full load, so that's a solid PSU, and you can't beat a 3-year warranty.

The other two options are just higher quality and more efficient.
