News group

Hey there, folks!

So, alright, I was wondering if there’s some kind of saint out there who could walk me through how to actually get connected to a newsgroup using Microsoft Outlook
I'm trying to figure out how to access news.comcast.net and get myself set up with a subscription for "us.hardware.deals".

It's just like setting up a standard email account—you open a news account, enter your username, your email address, and news.comcast.net. From there, you just "subscribe" to us.hardware.deals and you're done. Simple enough, right? 😉

Generally speaking, ISPs tend to be incredibly protective of their own news servers. So, if you happen to be using an Internet2 connection, heaven forbid, you might find yourself unable to access news.comcast.net, leaving you stuck with nothing but news.internet2.edu. In reality, you’re consuming virtually identical content in both instances! The only slight difference is the timing of when posts appear, which isn't even particularly vital for newsgroups anyway; it just depends on which specific server the "poster" happens to be logged into at that moment.

Basically, ISPs get super territorial over their own news servers, so if you're running on something like Internet2, goodness knows you won't be able to touch news.comcast.net... you'll be stuck with news.internet2.edu instead. It’s kind of a pain, but honestly, you're looking at pretty much the same stuff either way, it’s just that the timing shifts slightly depending on which server the actual poster is logged into, though since it's newsgroups, who even cares about a few minutes difference, right?...

I was trying to get my settings dialed in for the news (NNTP) server (news.comcast.net).

Man, I totally blanked on it, so I ended up hunting through the Internet2 site just to double-check everything... 😁
