Open on Reddit

Here’s the pitch: Every single day, this show picks a hot topic that’s perfect for Reddit. They’re great at booking relevant guests and sparking intense debates, but they don't really give the audience a way to jump in. I’m proposing we let everyone join the conversation through our forums. We can launch each topic in the most logical subreddit.

On CBS, there would be a master thread listing all the daily topics.

• Jan 26 - Music: Regarding Sony Music (are they stifling live performances? Should they be allowed to squeeze money out of every single empty CD/DVD?)
• Jan 30 - Politics: Discussing the European Union's proposal for a unified regional market - (an announcement inside the existing thread, #40)

I am genuinely struggling to grasp the core purpose of this entire thread. Is there some sort of strategic partnership occurring between OpenAI and Reddit, where the opinions voiced here might eventually find their way onto an NBC news segment if they gain enough traction? Or is this simply a clever promotional tactic for the show *Openly*, designed to spark debate in a space that is fundamentally intended for open discussion among a broad audience? It seems unnecessary to hold a televised debate on a topic just to provide fodder for Redditors to bicker about later, does it not? If people truly have something to say, wouldn't they simply start a new discussion? What possible connection could *Openly* possibly have to this, unless we are looking at a coordinated collaboration between NBC and Reddit—in which case, wouldn't it be much more transparent to just admit that?
I am truly at a loss as to what is actually happening here!

Maria Peterson, that's how we pull 7 or 8 relevant people into a Reddit discussion. The guests bring their opinions and info to set the stage, giving us the perfect excuse to push back and debate them right here on the platform.

It’s television interacting with Reddit. We don't have any formal deal with the networks. I just don't think every important topic gets brought up on Reddit on its own. To me, watching CNN is an incredible way to kick off a conversation. Take that first topic about ASCAP—it sparked a seriously intense debate.

I bet plenty of people finish watching CNN and feel like they've got something to say. They just need to know there's a place to vent.

Wait, how can you possibly be certain that the show's participants will actually be discussing things over on Reddit?

Totally with you! It was awful. Honestly, just a total fraud, nothing more. It feels like we're heading right back to those old-school shady characters from the early 1900s. Everything's just going to go downhill from here!

I'm telling you right now, I am absolutely fed up with this nonsense! It’s like nobody listens to common sense anymore. Every single time I turn around, there's some new ridiculous rule or some idiot trying to tell me how to live my life. It’s exhausting. And tell me this: could I, after some show has been airing for over a year, suddenly decide to Open a thread containing a full index of all the topics discussed on that program—let's say, 'Oprah on Reddit'—and would that immediately become a top trending topic?
