Paying for IVF?

Hey everyone.

So, here’s the deal. To my absolute bummer of a realization, I’m going to have to go through IVF—and now I’m stuck wondering about a few things:
1. How many rounds (or procedures, really) does standard health insurance actually cover?
2. What kind of medications am I looking at, what's the price tag, and am I footing that bill myself or does insurance step in?
3. I’m assuming it would be a smart move to grab some supplemental insurance since I’m only on a basic plan right now. Can anyone recommend a specific provider and tell me what the requirements are—like, what exactly should I make sure is covered?

I’d love to hear about your own experiences and any advice you might have.

Plus, you have to deal with how incredibly messy and complicated the whole system is here in the States—not impossible, obviously, but a total headache. A massive issue is that a ton of kids in foster care don't have "clean paperwork," if you know what I mean... basically, their biological parents show up just enough to stay on the radar and prevent the state from automatically terminating their parental rights, even though they’ve essentially abandoned them. So, legally speaking, these kids are stuck in limbo because you can't technically adopt them yet.

Anyway, Linda Wilson51, you should check out www.familyaction.org—specifically their forums. There's a whole sub-section where people dealing with the exact same struggles as you hang out, so you can get some real-world advice straight from the source.

From what I gather, Medicare only covers three rounds of treatment before they just cut you off.
I actually know quite a few couples who ended up heading over to Cleveland after their third attempt because the costs there are way more manageable than what we’re dealing with here.

On top of that, the Beta Association, which focuses on infertility advocacy, has launched its own dedicated forum recently. As far as I understand, the entire process is covered at no cost to you, and Medicare picks up the tab for the medications through three separate attempts. That said, your best bet is to hunt for specifics from people who have actually lived through this and have years of experience under their belts. I'm wishing you nothing but the best, and honestly, just try not to give any thought to the senseless comments you might encounter. 😘
