PC issues / Computer trouble

I’m having a bit of a struggle trying to put this exact problem into words since I don't really know my way around all the technical jargon, but I'll give it my best shot. I stumbled upon this situation this morning, and I suspect my mother might have accidentally kicked something under the desk last night...

On my monitor, I can see the taskbar, the icons—or folders, whatever they're called these days—that are "pinned" to the taskbar, and my desktop wallpaper is visible across the whole screen.
However, the actual icons or folders that used to sit right there on the desktop itself—you know, everything that isn't pinned—have completely vanished, leaving me staring at nothing but a solid blue background.
Looking at the taskbar, it seems like Google Chrome is running and I had PowerPoint open, but even then, it's just that blue screen staring back at me and nothing changes. I can't get into Chrome, I can't get into PowerPoint, honestly, I can't get into anything at all. I would upload some screenshots if I only knew how...

Check if you have a restore point enabled, then just roll the PC back to the last date on the list (you’ll only lose your settings and any apps you've installed since then)... or just take the thing to a repair shop.

It is possible—though I suppose we can't be certain—that your desktop icons have simply been hidden from view. Let us try this: right-click anywhere on the empty space of your desktop, hover your cursor over View, and then check whether the option for Show desktop icons has been checked. If it isn't, you might want to click it to enable that setting. Beyond that, I am afraid I am somewhat at a loss regarding what else could be causing this... if that doesn't do the trick, perhaps you should consider asking over . You might find a few more helpful perspectives there, I imagine...

Take a quick look at your virtual desktop too, though I doubt the icons actually moved; honestly, I'd bet they're just hidden, just like Aaron Baker7 mentioned.
