Hey everyone...
I couldn't find a dedicated thread for this on any American forums—most of the ones out there are pretty much dead zones...
I was diagnosed with ADHD back when I was a kid, and even though I haven't really found a treatment plan that works, I'm still pushing through to finish high school.
I definitely feel the symptoms, but I'm assuming most of you guys know the drill, so I won't bore you by listing them all out.
My goal is to become a commercial pilot...
What do you all think? Is it even possible to pass the medical exams? Just to be clear, there aren't any specific tests during the physical that would actually flag it.
Also, can I use ADHD medication without worrying about being disqualified or getting blacklisted?
What’s the general vibe from doctors and airlines regarding people like me? Can someone with ADHD actually make a career out of flying?

A quick note to the moderators...
Sorry if I'm off-topic here; I'm sure you guys will sort it out.
I’d really appreciate it if we could keep this as its own discussion rather than just burying it under some massive, generic thread about ADHD in general.
We don't have threads like this in the States, and I think this could be a huge help for anyone else stuck in the same boat I am. Thanks. 👍

Maybe a subforum dedicated to Career and Professional Development or something similar would be a better fit. I’m a little concerned you won't find anyone here who actually shares those kinds of experiences. As far as I'm concerned, let it stay where it is for now. If it doesn't get any traction, moving it later is easy enough.

I’ll jump in here—if anyone with actual expertise is willing to weigh in—I have ADHD, and my focus is a total mess.

I really want to just get a standard driver's license, but I'm terrified that this disorder will make me fail the test—or worse, that I'll end up causing a wreck on the road once I'm out there. Does anyone know if there's any kind of therapy available here in the States to help sharpen focus—maybe something like biofeedback or something similar?

I wouldn't be flying anywhere with you people.😂

Just kidding.

James Diaz59, do you have a doctor following your case?
If you're on the right medication, I'd imagine it wouldn't be an issue, but go talk to your physician first.

From what I remember, here in the States, you basically have to be in "perfect" health to fly professionally.
I don't want to get ahead of myself, but you should definitely go talk to a specialist about this. Honestly? I have my doubts about whether you'd clear all those medical exams and intense testing requirements.

James Diaz59, do you actually have a doctor monitoring you?
If you're on a proper medication regimen, it shouldn't be an issue—go talk to a professional about it.

I don't have any kind of "proper" meds, and I've never even seen a doctor—I basically self-diagnosed. That's why I'm asking here.

Why would you go the route of "self-diagnosing"? If this were truly the case, you likely would have been flagged back in elementary school—if not even earlier—given that a clinical diagnosis typically involves an extensive battery of screenings and observations by various specialists. It seems more likely that you simply need more eyes on the situation and some actual testing performed; besides, there is always the possibility of a misdiagnosis, which happens quite frequently in these types of cases. 😉
There is a significant amount of symptomatic overlap, where the presentation looks nearly identical, yet the underlying cause is usually something else entirely.

ADHD/ADD is generally noticeable in children (especially within the school system), though there are certain developmental stages where distinguishing the "H" from the acronym becomes difficult. There are plenty of kids whose hyperactivity is merely a passing phase—speaking from experience here—so the question often arises: is it just high energy, or is it actually ADHD?

In any event, a pilot with such a disorder probably shouldn't be in the cockpit; the profession demands intense focus, concentration, a specific level of composure, and timely accountability for minute details. Above all, self-control is paramount.

@MrPolice, if you have already learned to navigate life with this—assuming you were diagnosed at a young age and have since been "trained" through strict rules, structured routines, and rigorous self-organization—then perhaps many tasks won't pose much of an obstacle. However, it is vital to identify your specific subtype: are you primarily dealing with the first two letters (Attention Deficit), or is it the "H" (Hyperactivity) that disrupts your focus? Or perhaps you fall into the combined type. I suppose I don't know how you’re managing high school assignments lately; are you running into learning difficulties? Is that a major hurdle, or do you feel like the symptoms are gradually tapering off? That might be plausible, though they tend to persist in some capacity, even if they feel less acute. 🤷

As for medications, I am not particularly well-versed in the specifics; I know psychostimulants are prescribed to some, but I am not sure about the full range of options or how the regulatory landscape works here in the States. I haven't personally encountered anyone currently on those therapies, though I do encounter children who have received an ADHD/ADD diagnosis. Generally speaking, the approach to treatment (or symptom management) isn't one-dimensional; it doesn't rely exclusively on medication.

I truly don't know the exact policies held by major airlines, but I do know that as a pilot, you are required to undergo numerous screenings—some of which are quite rigorous—and it wouldn't be wise to overlook the fact that you have this diagnosis. For some people with ADHD/ADD, it may not be a significant issue because the symptoms aren't as pronounced, while for others, it can become a genuine struggle that interferes with their work performance, ultimately leading to poor outcomes. I don't mean to discourage you in the slightest, but I only want you to try and view the situation realistically from several different angles. 🙂
