Posting with multiple nicknames??

Like the title says, why is multi-accounting actually allowed here?

On most forums, this is a massive no-no, but here it seems totally normal.
Honestly, if you stick to just one handle, people probably think you're a joke.

Since my favorite part of this place is the political shouting matches, I've noticed most of the drama stems right from this whole multi-trolling thing.

I get that this is a broad-spectrum forum trying to cover everything under the sun, but personally, I don't see any reason why I couldn't use the same username whether I'm posting in a thread about dating or a religious debate.

Why wouldn't it be allowed? Usernames are anonymous anyway, so if someone wants to talk about sex with one person and then pivot to football with another, they should have that right...

But no, it’s strictly forbidden to jump into the same thread using multiple accounts, or any way that tries to mess with people's heads—even if the topics aren't identical, you can't have one account praising Donald Trump while trashing Joe Biden on one thread, and then switch to another account praising Joe Biden and trashing Donald Trump on a different thread...

So, I guess it’s totally fine if someone posts about how great a group looks on one thread, then hops over to another to worship some girl's flawless genetics (call me a bit cynical, but still...).
I mean, sure, you could technically sign up for two different forums and post the same stuff, but it just feels cheap when you're supposed to be part of one cohesive online community.

Yeah, usernames are anonymous, but they still represent a specific persona and mindset. Playing both sides with multiple accounts? It’s just bad etiquette.
Maybe I’m getting old or just holding onto outdated values, but this kind of thing really bugs me.

I mean, your example definitely leans toward "trolling" or just plain old messing with people, and depending on how much damage you actually cause, it could certainly land you in some trouble...

But honestly, if someone really wanted to, they could use one handle for ESPN, another over at the EPA, and then go tell a whole life story on an IRS forum, and nobody would be able to stop them.

well, depending on how intense or disruptive that trolling gets, it can absolutely be punished.

Just do what you gotta do. I'm never against decent moderation.

But someone could easily use one handle for sports talk, another over at the EPA, and a third to share some personal stuff on the IRS forums, etc.

We already figured out that's allowed; my point is just that it doesn't exactly help the vibe here.

I'm talking about the scenario you just laid out 🙂 Basically, if someone uses one handle to talk about the wonders of group sex, then switches to a different account on another thread to preach about abstinence and lifelong monogamy, they’re probably going to catch some heat depending on how much they're trolling... maybe not an instant permanent ban, though that's what happens when you use two accounts in the same thread, but they'll definitely face some kind of penalty

As long as using multiple handles doesn't confuse everyone else—because honestly, who cares if you're posting as ABC about basketball and then as CBA about skincare—then it's perfectly fine

If you actually have a reason to ask this and you suspect someone is juggling accounts just to mess with people, just report them to the moderators of that specific subforum

The thing is, stuff like this slips through the cracks way too easily—even with all the tools we have active. By the time anyone actually notices, the damage is already done. This forum gets massive, and if we start letting things like this slide, the whole site loses its credibility.

There are certain sensitive topics out there that could really bite a user in the ass if their identity ever got leaked. Take the adult sections, for instance—it’s pretty standard for people to want a separate profile to discuss things that have nothing to do with their private life.

Sure. Or maybe someone’s been hanging around here forever, people know who they are in real life, but they’re dealing with some deeply personal, heavy stuff—health issues, relationship drama, whatever—and they just want to ask about it without anyone knowing it's them... why wouldn't they?

And if someone is clearly juggling multiple handles just to be a troll, they get hit hard, usually getting every account banned except for their oldest one, which just gets a week-long timeout.

The truth is, there’s this massive gray area where someone isn't even trolling, they just don't have a damn good reason to switch names, though I'll give you that it feels pretty pointless to go by Peter on a football thread and then suddenly become Mark when discussing the best burgers in Chicago... but when things fall into that gray zone, the mods usually give everyone a pass, so nothing actually happens.
