Depends on which version of PowerPoint you're running—that determines what options you get. Just look at the Save as Type dropdown.

Thanks for the detailed response, but I’m still stuck. That’s exactly how I’ve been setting up my presentations, yet the music won't play when I move them to other computers. I even tried using Pack and Go, but that just leaves me with a folder full of files. All I want is a single PPS file that carries the audio along with it so it works perfectly on any machine.

Maybe it's just a compatibility headache—if you built the presentation on a machine running Microsoft Office 2007 but now you're trying to run it on a setup with Microsoft Office 2003, things tend to break.

I can't say for sure, but everything works on my end—both older and newer versions include the audio. It seems the files I create on my own computer have the music, but they don't show up when I try them on other machines.

Then something's definitely busted in your sound settings or you're just doing it wrong. Try grabbing these two files, Sound-pps and Sound-ppt, and test them out on your rig. They should work fine.

I don't get what you mean by "Pack and Go..?" Go to File => Save As => and for the file type, pick PowerPoint Show

I checked out that link you sent. It just covers stuff I already know. And saving as a PPS is nothing new to me. The problem is, when I open this presentation on other computers, the music doesn't play. I see the Pack and Go option under the file menu. It grabs all the necessary files, but they end up scattered everywhere.

btw: toss a PPT or PPS with sound somewhere so I can test it out.

Just throw all your audio files and the presentation itself into the exact same folder.

Once you move that presentation somewhere else, all those file links just break.

I'm not even sure if there's an actual option to Embed the song directly into the PowerPoint.

These two files don't have any audio, even though their file size suggests they should. I'm at work right now, but I can send the presentation over from home once I'm back.

Just had a lightbulb moment regarding what might be going on here.
You need to Embed the audio file, but it’s gotta be a WAV. If you tried using an MP3, that's your problem right there—you'll have to convert it to WAV first.
Give those two files I linked above a shot.

Also, don't forget to set the maximum size for the embedded file.

There are tons of posts on this thread, and it’s better to solve it here so anyone else hitting the same wall can find the fix.

I don't see what's so mysterious about it—it's just the sounds being Embed in the file.

There are enough posts here that it’s better to solve this publicly. That way, other people visiting the forum can find the same fix for their own issues.

Kyle, thank you so much for the help. I feel a bit awkward since there are so many replies already. But I think I'm finally getting close to a solution. Could you clarify how to actually set the music as an Embed file? To me, it always seems to stay as a linked file. If others following this thread can learn something too, then all this back-and-forth is worth it.

John! I was under the impression that we aren't even allowed to post private email addresses on the public boards, and honestly, all I really needed was that template from mistywalker94. It seems like you can't even upload presentations with *.PPS or *.PPT extensions directly to the forum anyway. So, yeah, that's why I went with a private message.

If you want to replicate this process using a specific template from mistywalker94, here is how you navigate through it.
First, fire up PowerPoint > File > Open > select "Hopeless Case.PPT" > delete the audio clip on the very first slide > then head over to Transitions > Sound > Other Sound > and browse through your audio folder to pick your favorite (in this case, I've included Bach's Ave Maria) in .WAV format > set it to loop until the next sound plays > finally, go to File > Save As > give it a clever new name > and make sure to save it as an Invented Name.PPS

Hey everyone, this is awesome. I have my own presentation, and it's similar to the others. Maybe I'm not a total lost cause after all. I just wish I knew how to build one like this from scratch. Also, I'm still confused about why that first piece of music played—I tried changing it, thinking there was an issue with the audio file itself. Looking forward to hearing what the actual problem was.

Is everything finally sorted out now?

I I still can't quite wrap my head around why that initial track showed up in the first place; I actually went through the trouble of trying to swap it out because I was convinced there was some sort of glitch with the audio file itself. Honestly, I’m just sitting here waiting for someone to explain what the actual hiccup was.

I just grabbed that track from YouTube and ran it through a converter to get it into *WAV format. After that, everything played out exactly the way I described earlier.
