Why does a ban on a specific thread result in a lockout from the entire forum rather than just being restricted to the single discussion where it occurred?

If we follow Tom’s logic, someone could just wander through the hundreds of thousands of different threads here, insulting people left and right or breaking every other rule in the book, and the only penalty would be getting banned from that specific thread alone 😵

Or—and I might be overthinking this—were you actually referring to an entire subforum when you said "topic"?

Back to the main forum.

It doesn't really matter, honestly. If you've been banned from the Economics section, why shouldn't you still be able to hang out in the Music section?

It feels like everyone is getting offended way too easily these days, doesn't it? It all comes down to perspective—one person calls someone a xenophobe, while another calls them a patriot. Who’s actually right? Whose side are we supposed to take? Someone’s opinion might offend one person just because they think differently, yet the person expressing it doesn't see anything wrong with it—in fact, they might find the other person's reaction just as offensive!

You end up getting banned because a moderator has their own specific viewpoint and decides something is negative when it might not even be. Then, instead of just being restricted from that one sub-forum, you get kicked off the entire site.

Look, let's not get bogged down in general complaints about moderation here—if you’ve got specific grievances (and I mean actual, concrete issues, not just vague venting), there’s an entire sub-forum dedicated to exactly that:

This space is strictly for technical discussions. As for your question—well, this is pretty much standard practice on basically any forum out there. Once someone is under a ban, they lose posting privileges across the board.
