Since every single thread about Jokes gets shut down before I can even ask a question, I’m just starting a new one!

So, silentsailor5 unlocked this new thread Funny photos vol. 2 which was actually locked up until Countess reopened it yesterday.
I’m wondering, why wasn't the old thread Funny photos unlocked along with that same Zodiac's post about not posting animations, just still photos?

1. The old thread has its own history, whereas this new one is just full of frustration and negativity.
2. If things stay like this, the old thread is eventually going to disappear from the front page of the Jokes section and nobody will ever read it again...
3. Wouldn't it be better if we met in the middle? Just bring back the old thread but apply the new rule against animations. Everyone wins!

Tyndall, please don't lock this thread because... well, I feel like I'm not getting actual answers, just warnings. I don't think I'm attacking anyone; I'm just trying to ask normal questions about a thread I was active in yesterday and want to stay active in...

Or just move this old debate over to the Offtopic subforum if that tired subject is really causing such a headache for Zodiac's section...☕

You’ve got my support too. Honestly, the Funny Photos thread was always my absolute favorite part of this entire forum...

I’d lay out some hard facts—especially regarding the technical side of things—but there's one major issue first. I honestly feel like some of the moderators aren't quite equipped to make these calls. You know, lacking the actual technical literacy needed to ensure rules are applied where they actually belong.

It’s just one of those things that happens here in America. Someone wanders into a section that’s functioning perfectly fine (like the funny photo thread) and starts forcing their own bad rules on everyone. These rules only matter to her, since she isn't even posting there, but she does it simply because she can... and well, you get the idea.

The uproar stems from exactly this kind of thing. It’s pretty rich to see people demanding total obedience, politeness, and "professional behavior" from the community while you guys are still weighing requests, all while comments like this are flying around.
silentsailor5 said:She's great in bed, and since I'm a moderator... well, you know how things work in this country, buddy... 🙂

🤦

By the way, is a GIF considered an animation? Wait, so does that mean it belongs in the video section? Or would it have been banned if everything were running smoothly and someone posted an ANIMATION instead of a VIDEO? (Sure, you split them up, but I really think the original question needs a second read.)
Is any of you moderators actually tech-savvy enough to even engage in this debate? (And I'm asking because if you haven't read this far, you clearly lack the technical literacy.) I'm being serious here, because
even on the very first page of this thread, there's a GIF (which is only 115kb).
http://i9.tinypic.com/2agkjld.gif

and an image that's 289kb.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t238/M4t174/rip.jpg

If you all share the same opinion as our colleague down there, then you aren't technically literate. I know the rule says images are smaller in width now, but I can explain it again with another example if necessary.
ZgSash said:The only idea was to separate images from animations, because animations are large and loading them causes issues for a certain number of users.

🤦

I am completely lost here. It's hard to explain something when you don't believe you should even have to explain it. Sorry, mods/admins, but GIF animations belong in the funny photo section (and they always have), just like larger images do. So, let me ask: do you actually have a valid reason for doing the opposite? Because the flimsy excuse you gave isn't cutting it.

This falls under standard messaging, and I don't see why it would violate forum rules... but claiming a typical guy won't be able to get over this and do what's right? That's a whole different story.

silentsailor5 mentioned that both threads were split and active. From where I’m sitting, though, it looks like only Vol. 2 is actually open.

Frank Jackson46 said:I would offer some facts (particularly regarding technical matters), but first, one thing must be addressed—and I believe the moderators, who lack the necessary expertise to make these calls—they aren't applying the rules where they actually belong due to a lack of technical literacy.

It seems only here can someone walk into a section where everything is functioning perfectly (the funny photo thread) and start pushing their own rules which are clearly flawed, yet important to them since they aren't even posting there, simply because they have the power to do so... and the rest is predictable.

An uproar is being manufactured for these reasons, all while you demand obedience, politeness, and professional conduct from the users while you are still deliberating on a request amidst comments like these.🤦

By the way, isn't a GIF an animation? Wait, does that mean it belongs in the video section? Or would it have been banned if someone had posted an ANIMATION instead of a VIDEO in a place where things were running smoothly? (The categories were separated, but I think the question needs to be reread.)
Is any one of you moderators technically literate enough to even engage in this debate? (I assume you've read this far, and if you haven't, it's because of a lack of technical knowledge.) This is a serious question because
there is already a GIF on the very first page of this thread (which is only 115kb).
http://i9.tinypic.com/2agkjld.gif

And an image that is 289kb.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t238/M4t174/rip.jpg

If everyone shares the same opinion as the colleague below, then you aren't quite technically proficient—and I am aware of the rule stating images must now have smaller widths, but I can explain further with another image if necessary.
🤦

I have somewhat lost my way in this idea; it is difficult to explain something when you feel it shouldn't require explanation. My apologies to the moderators and admins, but GIF animations should be in the funny photo section (as they have always been), along with larger images. So, I ask: do you have a specific reason for the opposite? Because the reasoning you provided was insufficient.

This falls under a standard message and I see no reason why it would violate the forum rules... however, the comment suggesting a typical person wouldn't be able to get over this and do what is required is a different matter entirely.

Forgive me, but from which specific post, reply, or PM of mine are you drawing the conclusion that we are technologically illiterate?

silentsailor5 said:Look, I’m sorry, but which specific post, reply, or DM of mine led you to think we're all tech-illiterate?

"So what am I supposed to do now?" I already said
that when moderators lack the actual technical chops to make calls—you know, being tech-savvy—they fail to set rules where they actually belong.
Is any single one of you moderators actually tech-literate enough?
And if everyone here shares the same mindset as the guy quoted below—and yeah, I used ZgSash as an example here
—then you basically just insulted yourself. I was looking for the illiterate ones, and my point was that anyone siding with ZgSash falls right into that category. I mean, you have more oversized images than actual GIFs, get it?

So, I wasn't pulling this from your posts (I haven't even checked if you have a post like that, nor did I claim your technical incompetence was the issue; your point was actually a counterargument to how you guys shut down threads with excuses like "just be nice, the request is being handled, we're all professionals here, but you aren't, so thread closed")
I was pulling it from your colleague. So, if you're backing his logic, then... well, I think you get the picture.

William Myers7 said:Why does every single thread around here end up being about PDFs? Seriously, it’s like every time I open this forum, there's another discussion about some file format. Jokes. Lock this thread before I even get a chance to ask anything—I’m already opening a new one!

So, looks like silentsailor5 just unlocked a new thread. Funny photo Vol. 2 Which one was locked up until now, and which one did Countess open yesterday?
I’ve been wondering—what exactly happened to that old thread? Why did it just... die? funny photo Didn't silentsailor5 lock the thread with that same post of his—you know, the one where he insisted we only post actual photos and keep all the animations out of this specific topic?

1. Old news. This thread actually has some history behind it—it’s got depth. The new one, though? It’s just a total disaster, nothing but pure rage, bitterness, and straight-up hate.
If things stay exactly like this, we’re looking at a real mess. old school Eventually, this thread is going to get buried and pushed off the front page of the PDF. Jokes. And honestly? It’s just not going to happen anymore... nobody's even going to bother reading this stuff.
Wouldn't it be fair to just meet in the middle? Give us back what belongs to us. I’ve been thinking about that old lady—you know, the one everyone keeps bringing up. Honestly, it’s getting a bit ridiculous at this point. I don't mean to be that guy, but can we just move past it? It feels like we're stuck in a loop. So, Temu is actually trying to roll out some new rule against animations? Honestly, if they pull this off, it’s a win-win situation—they get their clean interface, and we get a break from the constant visual noise. Everyone wins!

Tyndall, please don't shut this thread down—look, I’m not getting any actual answers here, just a constant stream of warnings. It’s frustrating because I’m not out here attacking anyone; I’m just trying to ask legitimate questions about a topic I was actively participating in yesterday and fully intend to keep engaging with moving forward.

I'm in. Count me in.

Honestly, I’ve been sitting here thinking about this, and I really believe it’s better to just unlock the old one rather than trying to force something new into existence. There's something to be said for working with what you already have—it's less chaotic that way.
We seriously need to find some middle ground here—between the admins and everyone else on the forums.

I honestly don't get why there’s such an intense push to shut down the original thread—it’s not like we’re discussing life-or-death matters here, nor is the topic aggressive, hateful, or pushing any of those other toxic agendas... I just don't see the point.

Seriously, people—can someone please just unlock the original 'funny photo' thread? You really stand to gain everything without losing a single thing. 🙂

P.S. William Myers7, I’m actually glad to see you’re still hanging around here—I honestly thought they might have finally chased you off with the way everyone’s been acting lately.

Just put a moderator note at the end of the old thread with a link to the new one, then put a note at the start of the new thread linking back to the old one, and the issue is solved. I've already implemented this method on my own subforums.

In general, I think you guys are making a mountain out of a molehill. You're creating problems where none exist. The old thread isn't deleted; it still exists. Everything that was possible before is still possible, just split into two threads. I honestly don't see the issue. Link the threads together and it's done. 🤷

Jacob Foster11 said:I honestly don't see what the big deal is here.

Up until we hit page 80 of this image thread, nobody ever batted an eye at people posting GIFs, but then suddenly, the new moderator gets all worked up about them. She started making threats about banning them without even giving us a decent, constructive reason why GIFs don't belong in an image thread. I mean, if you moderators all sat down and decided on this rule together, maybe you could have just updated the rules in that PDF to explain why there needs to be a dedicated thread for GIFs instead of mixing them in with regular images.

If they just opened a separate thread for GIFs, people could keep posting images in the old one like usual. But since our usernames aren't highlighted in black, dozens of us ended up jumping in to speak up, which I guess just made things more chaotic.

I still haven't received a straight answer, so I'm reposting this and asking for some real responses to my points!

What I've gathered over the last couple of days is that the situation on this forum is kind of like the state of politics in America:
1. There aren't many honest people in charge,
2. People in power tend to dodge direct questions instead of answering them (like the ones I asked above),
3. They seem to use their authority however they want for their own benefit,
4. They don't really care about what the people (the regular forum users) actually want,
5. On the best parts of the site, you end up with the worst moderators (sort of like how some of the nicest cities have the worst mayors)

The old thread hasn't been deleted; it's still right there. Everything you could do before is still possible, it's just split across two threads now. I guess I don't really see what the issue is. The threads are linked together, so that should be that. 🤷

We aren't making a mountain out of a molehill—other people are the ones doing that! We just want things to go back to how they were, maybe even keeping the GIFs separate from the old thread since there's no need to open a new one. Like I said, the old thread is eventually going to get lost in a sea of other topics, whereas this way it stays right at the top.

Alright, so here’s what I’m thinking: why on earth should I bother starting a brand new thread for funny photos—especially since the old one already hit about 80 pages—when there are plenty of other active threads on Forums.com that have way more volume than that?

William Myers7 said:I’m genuinely curious, why wasn't the old Funny Photos thread just updated with that same post from silentsailor5, you know, explicitly stating that we shouldn't be dumping animations in there and should stick strictly to still photos?

Because if we went back and edited the old thread, we'd have a massive backlog of animations that wouldn't even make sense to delete now, and more importantly, if we left that thread open as-is, half the newbies on this forum would inevitably start flooding it with GIFs anyway. Let's be real, almost nobody actually bothers to read the rules pinned in the first post; I've seen it happen a thousand times.

The most straightforward fix—and honestly, the one that makes the most sense—was to just keep the old thread locked tight and spin up separate, brand-new threads specifically for photos versus animations. Which is exactly what was done. So, really, what's the problem with that approach?

But hey, please, continue complaining; I know you guys don't have anything better to do than try to spark little revolutions over nothing on an internet forum. 🙂

Kate Castillo55 said:Fine, then here is my question: why bother starting a new thread just for funny photos when there are much more active threads on this forum with way more pages?

I have no idea what the moderators' exact motives are. But this is how I see it... The old thread had both funny animated GIFs and regular images. Those are two different things. If you split them into new, separate threads, the boundary becomes clearly defined.

As for the ban on GIFs, I actually get it. Mobile data is becoming the standard everywhere. As we all know, mobile plans still don't always offer unlimited flat rates. For example, you might have a package with half a gig included, or just one GB, where every extra megabyte costs an arm and a leg. If someone is browsing like that, they obviously care whether images are just a few dozen or hundred KB versus several MB. Someone opening this new photo thread can rest easy knowing they won't run into a single "heavy" GIF.

Jacob Foster11 said:I don't really get it. How is the old thread going to get lost if there's a direct link to it in the new one?

I guess I don't even need to answer questions like that because the answer is pretty obvious... It honestly seemed easier to just complicate things and open a whole new thread—just to spite us regular forum users—rather than just unlocking the old one and letting us enjoy it. I hope you all had a good laugh while deciding what to do with us and our thread. Kind of like how they laugh in Congress every day when the cameras aren't rolling...

We could have met halfway; maybe kept the old thread without any animations, but nope... I guess it just has to be done your way, even if it leaves a huge group of unhappy forum members behind...

To follow up on your latest post... Nobody opens the Funny Photo thread using mobile data; partly because of the massive bandwidth that thread eats up, and partly because the experience is just terrible when you're trying to view images on a tiny screen! Okay?

Honestly, I think people are only complaining because they have nothing better to do than try to start little revolutions on the forum. 🙂

Hey, give it a rest, okay! Up until page 80 and before the new moderator arrived, nobody was even complaining about the animations.
Newbies will get 10 penalty points, which isn't really a big deal! And once they look at the jokes in the PDFs, they'll see there are two distinct threads: funny photos and funny animated GIFs! So, calling that the "easiest" solution is probably more like the dumbest one. I'm still waiting for a real answer here, rather than someone just dodging my question!

This doesn't set any kind of precedent. There are plenty of instances where an old thread gets shut down just so a successor can be opened. Usually, it’s because of updated community guidelines. This isn't some isolated incident, and it certainly won't be the last. Stop getting worked up over what is clearly standard moderation. You don't have a single objective reason to complain here. Nothing was deleted, and nothing that was previously allowed is now being restricted.

Here is an example of one old closed thread and its successor:

EDIT:
You received a direct answer. The issue is simply that you aren't satisfied with it.

I think there are plenty of examples where an old thread gets closed and a new one starts up as its successor. Usually, it's just because of updated rules. This isn't the first time this has happened, and I guess it won't be the last either. Getting worked up over what seems like standard moderation probably isn't the best move. There isn't really an objective reason to complain here. Nothing was actually deleted or blocked that wasn't allowed before.

Here’s an example of just one old closed thread and its successor:
http://www.forums.com/showthread.php?p...0#post18278560
http://forums.com/showthread.php?p=18278531#post18278531

That rule actually started when the new moderator joined, who, if I recall correctly, had never even been on the Jokes board before.

With the new rule, they could have just added it to the guidelines on every single board—like saying animations shouldn't be posted in that specific thread anymore, so a new one was opened instead.
I guess we all would have still enjoyed the old thread plus the new one, which people could fill with animations, especially for those users on mobile data!

Another thing... It's not quite like that transition here. The new thread is just full of anger, clutter, and random text... You should go take a look!
Or maybe I should just give you the links so you don't get lost?

And you mentioned a thread with 350 pages, while ours didn't even hit 100! Come on now...
