The goal is to stay airborne, not hit the ground.
Paper Planes are taking off globally again as pilots scramble to qualify for the Red Bull Paper Wings 2009. finals. We're looking at thousands of pilots from 85 different countries competing in the opening rounds, all fighting for a spot among the top ten elite flyers at the world championship this April. They'll be battling it out in three categories: flight duration, distance, and stunts. Just a heads-up: the whole point is to fly, not crash.
The crowning of our world champion will take place at a permanent exhibit featuring beautifully restored aviation relics. A select group of students will get to experience an unforgettable aeronautical adventure—where their university IDs basically serve as their pilot licenses.
The scale of this thing has practically doubled in no time. Back in 2006, we had 48 countries represented, but for this second edition, the competition has exploded to 85 countries.
All you really need is a sheet of paper. It doesn't matter what kind of shape that standard 80g/m2 sheet takes once it leaves your hand. You just have to think it through, build the craft, and master the aerodynamics. Any kind of outside help or extra gadgets are strictly banned in the "longest flight time" and "longest distance" categories. Only in the "stunts" category are amateur engineers allowed to break out the scissors, glue, and other supplies.
Think you can fly? Got a knack for folding paper into something that actually works? Maybe your arm has the raw power needed for a massive distance throw or a long hang-time flight? Or perhaps you’ve got enough creativity to nail the stunt category? If you answered yes to any of those, sign up now.
