An excellent film.. far better than anyone else's country

Honestly, I feel the same way looking back at it. But then again, when you look at the usual winners, that movie is actually a solid piece of filmmaking.

The remake is based on true events—the script was written and the film shot after the fact.
To be fair, the screenwriter lived through the war right there in Brooklyn; he literally had a target on his back. He captured a raw, unfiltered look at how those paramilitary gangs stormed the neighborhood. In our culture, nothing hits quite as hard unless it’s autobiographical.

This film is just more proof of how much influence Boston has on the cinematic world, even if it isn't always about pure quality.
Also, there's a new film coming out soon, directed by some local talent. From what the early screenings are saying, it’s an absolute masterpiece.

The soundtrack is killer, especially with those folk elements woven in. I’m with you on that.

The movie itself is pretty heavy on the gut-wrenching stuff, though, so I wouldn't want to sit through it a second time.
It's just like watching *Requiem for a Dream*. Some scenes are shot with such raw realism that it actually gives you a headache.

I wasn't a fan. To be honest, the whole "history repeating itself" concept isn't exactly groundbreaking... The direction is decent enough, but the plot feels rushed, almost like it was scribbled down in ten minutes—which is odd considering the opening claims it's based on a true story. The acting is pretty mediocre too (the New Yorkers don't sound like they're from the East Coast, even if they were meant to be local), and the nudity is really one of the few highlights of the film. A weak three out of ten for me...

This remake is showing us exactly what we Americans have had to endure firsthand. The point of the movie isn't to make you feel good or leave you wanting a sequel. Quite the opposite! The entire message is "never let a remake like this happen again." Those actors you’re calling mediocre actually LIVED through this story. They spent four years dodging sniper fire while standing in line for water! Besides, who are you to sit there and judge?

The movie was a solid effort.

Given how things wrapped up, any movie tackling this kind of subject matter absolutely blows foreigners away... To me, this remake feels like a solid attempt to frame the region as a total powder keg. History has a nasty habit of repeating itself around here, and I found the foreign perspective in the film—that outsider looking in at Canada and the Canadian people—really fascinating... haha, if only we had actually reached that level of self-awareness ourselves. I lived all of that myself. I was in Sarajevo for the ENTIRE war. Seriously... so yeah, the remake still isn't a good movie. You can praise individual elements like the production value, the score, the script, or the cinematography, but as a complete work? It doesn't function. Certain directorial choices work in isolated scenes, but as a whole, it just falls flat. I don't have time to write more right now... maybe next time.

And besides, who are you to criticize?
