I'm waiting for someone to tell me the rules apply to everyone equally, regardless of whether they're blue, black, red, purple, or green. By the way, it would be helpful if Tyndall actually wrote something, just so we can see where he stands on all this. He changes nicknames, doesn't he? 🙂

For instance, I was MIA for about two years before deciding to start posting again, and honestly, I just couldn't be bothered to go through the hassle of setting up a brand-new profile. Then you have someone like Spectre, who is now essentially an ex-Spectre... If a person tries to log in with their former username without realizing it’s been changed, what actually happens?

I just figured it might be a bit much to simply delete people without even giving them a chance to realize their handle had been changed, but I’m just curious about how the technical side of things works... Since, as it happens, I registered that way myself and then drifted away from the forum for a while before returning. Not that anyone is out to claim my specific username, but still... 😁
An experiment is fine, nothing too heavy, but let's not act surprised when people react or ask questions—especially those who are sensitive to any hint of an abuse of power. It’s perfectly natural for folks to feel uneasy seeing privileges granted to some that aren't available to us, particularly since, by sheer coincidence, none other than the newly minted Spectre was in charge of these name changes. And naturally, we weren't given any heads-up about these new features. You're already getting defensive, but honestly, you should be glad people are staying vigilant against potential overreach; it's actually a sign of political maturity and an awareness of one's own rights, duties, and the importance of maintaining control over one's space, identity, actions, body, handle, and avatar within this digital jungle. 😁
Look, an experiment is fine—it's not the end of the world—but please don't act surprised when people start questioning things or getting sensitive about potential abuses of power. It’s completely natural for people to feel uneasy seeing certain permissions granted to some while we're left in the dark, especially since, by total coincidence, it turns out Spectre was the one tasked with handling these nickname changes.
Oh, naturally, none of us were given any notice regarding these new capabilities. And wow, look at that immediate defensiveness! Honestly, you should be glad that people are staying vigilant against potential power trips; that's actually a sign of political maturity and an awareness of one's own rights and responsibilities. It shows people care about their identity, their presence, and their digital footprint in this virtual zoo. 😁

Look, nobody intended for anything bad to happen or for anyone to get hurt here, but I totally see why there’s a gray area when you consider someone might actually want to get back into their account. That said, the rule shouldn't apply to anyone with a significant post count or anyone who's been active within the last few years. The concept itself isn't necessarily bad, it just needs a lot more fine-tuning before it's set in stone.Look, an experiment is fine—it's not the end of the world—but please don't act surprised when people start questioning things or getting sensitive about potential abuses of power. I really don't blame anyone; it's perfectly reasonable to have questions when sudden changes happen without any heads-up. 🙂
The goal wasn't to discriminate against anyone; we just didn't want to go public with this phase while the final decisions on who gets changed and when are still pending. We aren't quite sure how the mechanics will work yet, though we don't anticipate major issues. We honestly believe it's better to move slowly and establish a concrete, formal policy that applies to everyone equally, rather than rolling this out en masse with such vague guidelines.Oh, naturally, none of us were given any notice regarding these new capabilities. If we stay silent, we're accused of ignoring the issue. If we respond, we're accused of being defensive. 🙄 ☕ 😁 It feels like you can't win with you guys. 😳 😁
The reason you haven't been notified is that a final decision hasn't been reached yet. But once it is, we promise we'll let you know. 🙂
wiredangler5 said:Nica made a good point that this was just an experiment from Anderlon, rather than moderators just doing whatever they want. I'll share a bit more, assuming Anderlon won't mind. Just trying to clear the air here.
As weird as it sounds, this wasn't done out of some whim by Spectre, nor is it about special treatment. Spectre was basically the guinea pig for Anderlon's experiment, just like Nica mentioned.
If you look at the threads where people request name changes, there's a huge group of users who might actually benefit from this. It happens all the time where someone wants a name like Nicole, but it's been sitting idle since 2006 with maybe zero or five posts. People end up registering as Nicole_1011 or Nicole_1903 because the simple version is taken. We've seen those requests before. And honestly, nobody would bother changing a name with a high post count. Let's say, 20 posts or more. This is really just about inactive accounts with almost no history.
That was the whole idea behind the experiment: to see if this change was even possible or useful in practice for everyone. Not just for mods, but for any user. I don't want anyone thinking I'm pushing to make this permanent; I'm not. As far as I know, that's not happening. Whether it becomes a thing or not is entirely up to Anderlon.
So, you can stop ganging up on Spectre now. He’s innocent. 😁
Anyway, let's wait for Tyndall to say something more. ☕
Tyndall?
😁
Lest I forget, it would be an absurd notion for anyone to think about changing usernames once they’ve already built up a significant post count. It just doesn't make sense. I'll go ahead and throw out a figure here, purely off the top of my head—let's say twenty posts or more—and that's where the line should be drawn.
Now you can finally take the noose off Spectre; they were about to hang an innocent man. 😁
Not necessarily. Let's just hold off and wait for Tyndall to weigh in with some more details. ☕
Tyndall?

I remember posting on that thread about changing my handle because there was some guy named Shadow who hadn't been active in forever, blah blah blah. Now, all of a sudden, he’s back in action. I have no idea what triggered this. Did you guys go ahead and reactivate him yourselves, or what? 😂Lest I forget, it would be an absurd notion for anyone to think about changing usernames once they’ve already built up a significant post count. Spectre used to have 21 posts. Just sitting there. Looking back on it now. I remember when things were different. Back then, everything felt more straightforward, less cluttered. Now? It’s all just noise. Anyway, that was the count. 21. Not much, but it was what it was. ☕ I'm feeling pretty down about that number 30. It’s hard to swallow when Frank Reed4 is sitting there with a 34. Just one of those days, I suppose. Now you can finally take the noose off Spectre; they were about to hang an innocent man. 😁
I’m not looking to hang anyone out to dry here. I’m simply pointing out certain irregularities and injustices. It’s painfully obvious that even among equals, there are those who hold more weight than others—and now, it seems they're all trying to pull a fast one by hiding behind these "experiment" excuses. And honestly? I find this whole experiment concept incredibly murky. If the goal was to see if Spectre....Do I need to change my handle since he's acting as a moderator? Or does a different procedure apply for someone in that position? 🍿Not necessarily. Let's just hold off and wait for Tyndall to weigh in with some more details. ☕
Tyndall?
Yeah, exactly. But Tyndall?
