Maybe this question should've gone in my previous thread, rule? Who’s actually allowed to post on a thread, and who isn't? , but I had to start a new one since that one's locked.
Just a quick intro... so, about two months ago, I got flagged with 10 points because of a post I made in the "LOOKING FOR RENTAL" thread (the master thread, read the 1st post!).
Before joining, I read the intro post which goes like this:
Maybe I should've realized from that that asking or commenting wasn't allowed, but clearly I didn't, so I got hit with a strike.
I wasn't arguing against the strike; I just left a comment and an apology:
and I got this response:
And that was that.
Moving on...
A few days ago, I sent a DM asking to have this post deleted.
Given that I received a ban and points for what I considered a perfectly polite comment and inquiry (asking if people looking for rentals for four people actually get any offers for $25-$35), under the assumption that such a post wasn't appropriate for the thread, I asked for it to be deleted.
But it wasn't deleted. I thought maybe it would happen if I clicked the little triangle icon and officially requested the deletion, but even after that, nothing happened.
Now I'm wondering, where is the consistency or fairness in how mods treat users? Is this post really okay to stay here, while mine deserved a ban?
Why is so much tolerated on this thread for some, while others get banned the second they write something that deviates slightly from the rules or goes slightly off-topic with a question or comment?
By the way, the rules state: "This thread is intended for everyone looking for summer rentals," yet many people look for rentals during other times of the year... which means they're breaking the rules.
(I asked for this to be updated, since vacation rentals are searched for all over the US all year round, but nothing has come of it so far)
It also says "it is FORBIDDEN to offer rentals," but some people do it anyway.
I'm also curious if it's actually within the rules for landlords to try and find rentals for their own guests on this thread... (is this a thread for landlords or for users and potentially their acquaintances looking for stays?) ...to boost their business and reputation as hosts... and while doing so, posting their full names, emails, and addresses on the forum?
Check out some examples of those posts in post no. 3.
Since the mods don't seem to be playing fair—especially after getting hit with a ban and a response two months ago (dig through my comments on that thread; I'm usually super careful, so I'd love to know what I supposedly missed...) when I definitely didn't do anything wrong... anyway, I just stumbled upon a post that really shouldn't even be in this thread...
...but I did a little digging and pulled out a few posts (copy/paste them below in post no. 2, I've bolded the interesting ones)...there's everything here... off-topic stuff, chatting, spam, trolling... even ads.
Look, you can't catch everything, mistakes happen... though sometimes it’s weird how certain posts aren't deleted when they're sitting right above a warning... hard to believe they weren't seen.
No, this isn't just an oversight. I've asked twice to have this post removed, so now I'm wondering why it's still up.
Why the double standards? Why get a harmless, polite comment deleted and penalized while something like this stays up even after two requests? (And it's not just this one; plenty of posts that break the rules stay up, even when they're clearly mocking people looking for budget stays)
It's not about being bitter; I just want things to be fair for everyone on the forum.

Keep it short and sweet: include dates, area, and what you need. For example:
Dates: 08/01-08/07
Location: Maui
Requirements: Bathroom, kitchen, space for 2 adults and 1 child, near the beach
It would be fair if you replied to the private messages landlords send after seeing your public ad, just so they know if you're interested or not.
Thanks!

Original Post:

Some of these requests for a four-person rental for $30-$35 just don't seem realistic to me. I mean, sure, everything is overpriced and it'd be better for guests if prices were lower, but supply and demand drive the market—if someone can get $50-$60, they aren't going to settle for $30.
Honestly, I don't even know if those kinds of places exist. Are any of you actually getting offers at that price? I'm not exactly an expert on local rates (which obviously change depending on where you are), but just looking at it... finding a place for four people during peak season—especially with parking, Wi-Fi, AC, and being near the beach—for under $50 seems pretty much impossible. Or is it? 🤷
All the best,
I wasn't arguing against the strike; I just left a comment and an apology:
Just a quick thought on the ban.
Since everyone here goes off-topic constantly and (mostly) nobody says anything, I didn't think this thread would be any different. Especially since I've seen people discussing prices—basically people looking for rentals—and I didn't see any warning saying that wasn't allowed.
I read the first post and saw that offering rentals is forbidden, but nothing else was listed as a restriction.
So, my comment wasn't meant to bait anyone; I was just sharing my opinion and expressing doubt about whether those kinds of apartments even exist, while asking if people actually get offers for those types of requests.
Since I didn't realize it wasn't allowed, my apologies.
and I got this response:

Are you looking for a place? No. So why even bother posting in this thread? This thread is for "PEOPLE LOOKING FOR RENTALS." Everything else is just noise. Go ahead, search through the comments on this thread; most people are extremely careful about this, especially me, so I'd love to know where exactly I missed the rule.
And that was that.
Moving on...

Just like you value your money, private landlords value their properties/rooms—which you probably want at a ridiculous price during peak season, fully equipped, and ideally 30 feet from the beach.
Honestly, my favorite ones are the people demanding natural shade on a sandy beach. If we're private landlords, we aren't owners of public beach resorts.
Best regards!
