Setting standards

So, I started a thread yesterday about how the Ford association could support local businesses http://www.reddit.com/r/thread/869295 and immediately became the target of some absolutely vile swearing and insults from user Azrael (http://www.reddit.com/r/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=53490950), who spent maybe four or five posts detailing these... uh, let's call them "elaborate schemes" involving his mother and my perfectly decent dog, Gara.

Then, the next day, the moderator Carol Price4 pops up with a message saying, "Try to keep it civil," and wipes those poetically phrased insults clean. Honestly, am I missing something here? Like, what kind of logic is this? Because the posts are gone, but I noticed Azrael didn't get grayed out or anything.

Just, you know, purely for the sake of setting standards, I’m asking if this kind of "poetic expression" is actually allowed on Reddit, and whether I should expect the same treatment down the road.

For instance—if someone really doesn't like my writing style—can I just lean into some colorful, old-school vernacular and tell them, "Screw your Gara and your whole family," or maybe something even more out there, and then just assume my posts will eventually be deleted while I keep happily posting away on the site?

I guess I'm seeing radio silence here... So, does that mean this kind of communication is actually okay?

I took a quick look through the thread, and honestly, some of those comments were pretty out of line. I went ahead and reached out to the mods and the super-mod to ask if they could take another pass at it and clean things up where necessary.

The title of this thread is "setting standards"—so the core issue here isn't just about the user who started it. It affects me too.

If I hadn't been busy, I would have reported this and had it deleted before it even reached the point of being offensive. If people holding Frank aren't given their own dedicated threads to start discussions, I don't see why you think anyone else gets a free pass to stir the pot.

I just deleted the posts that were ugly and insulting to you—since I don't know much about this specific subject, I left it to the others to handle the actual moderation and sanctions properly.

Regarding that whole thread from the start (I took a look back through the posts)—as a newer member, I definitely respect his take on the matter.
