Ever since that last Windows 10 update, my laptop webcam just refuses to work in Skype
and when I dig through settings > privacy > camera > to pick which apps can
actually use the Skype camera, the app isn't even showing up on the list. I'm totally stuck here. Any help?

Man, I went through the exact same thing about a month ago—I honestly thought my camera had just frozen up or died completely, so I actually tossed it in the trash 🤦🤦 Look, if you don't mind, try searching Google for some kind of webcam testing site—maybe something like Omegle, or just an online snapshot tool—just to see if it'll actually pull up a picture or show your webcam feed... It seems like a ton of people are complaining about their webcams acting up ever since they updated Windows..

My camera works perfectly fine for everything else, except when I try using Skype. The real headache is why Skype isn't even showing up on the list of apps allowed to access my camera—it’s totally crossing the line for me.

Honestly, just try reinstalling Skype and that should do the trick 🙂

I feel like I’ve tried absolutely everything at this point. I’ve gone through the whole routine of uninstalling and reinstalling, even tried rolling back to an older version of Skype, but honestly? Nothing works. It’s infuriating. Since Skype is my main way to stay in touch with my grandson—which is something a buddy of mine insisted I set up—I decided to give WhatsApp a shot instead. And wouldn't you know it? WhatsApp popped right up on my contact list immediately without any drama. Is it possible my laptop just isn't recognizing Skype anymore? I'm at my wit's end here. Any advice on what I should do next?

Skype works perfectly fine on Windows, so I don't think it's a case of the hardware being too niche for the app to pick up the camera... It’s most likely just a glitch within Skype itself—or maybe a Windows update acting up...

I'm spiraling a bit here, so I need to ask the experts: is the camera actually recording even when there's no indicator that it's on?

So, I’ve got the Skype icon sitting right there on my desktop, but I wasn't really paying attention to all my open apps, and turns out I actually have Skype preview running. Here's the kicker: when I go into the Test feature, the camera works perfectly fine, but the second I click over to video Settings in Skype, everything just goes black. It's just a dead, black window staring back at me. Can anyone please give me some advice on how to fix this mess?

Maybe just try reinstalling Skype? You can grab a fresh version here https://www.skype.com/en/download/skype-for-desktop/
