It’s mostly just habit. You probably trained your metabolism to act this way, so now it’s just looking for that fix...
For me, it's a habit thing, too, but I've got a few other major factors at play—health issues.
If you're feeling unsure, talk to your doctor. Maybe try reaching out to Dr. Fauci or someone like that, sounds like they might know their stuff...

It might just be a habit... I’ve actually tried sticking to an eight-hour sleep schedule for a few weeks at a time, but once a week, I just crash. I'll end up passing out for a whole afternoon 😁
My doctor is great, but I honestly doubt he has much insight into this specific issue. It feels like something I should probably run by a specialist—I'm just not sure which kind 🤔

Man, I’ve really gotten used to sleeping in way too much this summer—every single morning is such a struggle. My alarm just keeps going and going, and I’m just lying there, half-asleep, feeling like I could never actually catch up on rest, no matter how long I sleep.😵I’m honestly not sure how to fix it, though. It’s not even like I’m staying up late at night or anything; I just seem to be oversleeping way too much.

So, I was reading somewhere that women actually need about two more hours of sleep than men on average...
Basically, we just need to train our guys to wake up earlier, brew the coffee, fix breakfast, and all that good stuff.😛

Mmm. So he gets eight, I get ten, plus free coffee—sounds like a solid deal to me.😉 😬

Seems like that might be your only real option...😉 And hey, if he’s one of those guys who needs ten hours of sleep (and you can find plenty of them out there), then you’re more than justified in taking your twelve. 😁

Like I mentioned in another thread recently, everyone's sleep needs are different; it all comes down to how fast you move through the various sleep cycles. The most critical parts are stages 3 and 4—those deep sleep phases where your body actually gets its real rest.

Because of that, some people might get by on just 5 or 6 hours if they breeze through those stages quickly (though that’s pretty rare!), while others honestly need 10 hours or more...

I hope nobody wakes me up, because honestly, I could probably sleep through the entire day if I had my chance😬

Ugh, man... 12 hours? Honestly, I thought *I* was the one struggling here. For me, it’s really a matter of getting a solid 9 to 9.5 hours—no less. If I manage to sleep for anything under 8, I end up dealing with massive acid reflux first thing in the morning (which is just a lovely way to start the day, isn't it?) and then I spend the entire afternoon looking pale and feeling absolutely useless. Often, it's accompanied by these nagging pains—especially when the weather is acting up and everything feels heavy—and I end up being so lethargic that the nausea and aches don't even let up until about 6 PM. Now, I don't usually sleep for 12 hours straight unless I've been traveling for days, or maybe if I went a bit too hard celebrating something, or perhaps if stress or a full moon has left me totally sleep-deprived... in those cases, I have to catch up, so I just crash and stay out for 12. But otherwise, I’m still pretty exhausted even if I get more than 9.5.

But here is the kicker: everyone loves to lecture me about how I'm "wasting half my life" sleeping, telling me I need to force myself to be productive, or asking what I'll do once I graduate college and start a career, or when I have kids... they truly haven't a clue what it's like for me (and I suppose, maybe, it is all in my head?). I mean... look, if something isn't quite right with your brain chemistry and you find that 2 or 3 hours of sleep is enough to function at full throttle (and there are certainly people like that), it doesn't mean that because the rest of the population sleeps 7 or 8 hours, I shouldn't listen to my own body. I eat healthy and I exercise regularly, but I need sleep too! For me, caffeine, various stimulants, and synthetic antioxidant supplements just don't cut it—so I would much rather sleep exactly as much as I need than wake up early only to spend the entire day capable of nothing more than sipping tea in my pajamas.

Are there any other similar cases out there? 😬

Oh, I should probably add one more thing. In my case—and this is likely due to stress—my cortisol levels are elevated, which honestly can be quite draining. It’s exhausting! But looking at what you described, maybe nothing is wrong with you since you aren't mentioning any other "symptoms," though did you happen to get your cortisol checked as well? My blood sugar also leaves me feeling a bit sluggish, though mostly I just feel extra hungry rather than tired. My fasting glucose levels seem fine, but perhaps my glucose tolerance is slightly off? I haven't done a formal glucose tolerance test yet, but I find that I feel much better when I cut back on the sweets.

I hit my sweet spot at 9 hours of sleep. Realized that ages ago. I can scrape by on 8, but it’s just not it—I feel totally off, both physically and mentally.

I’m a fan of sleeping too, but I’ve always been a total night owl. I usually don't even think about hitting the sack until 3 or 4 in the morning, which means I'm sleeping in until noon or one. It’s not like I’m pulling twelve-hour shifts every single day; I usually get about eight or nine hours, though if I had a rough night before, I'll definitely sleep longer than that.
If I could actually land a decent job, I’d probably force myself back into a normal schedule, but life happens.

Maybe six hours overnight is enough
but during the day, I definitely need at least an hour or two
I just feel way more refreshed when I can squeeze in those two hours this afternoon, rather than trying to power through with six or seven hours of sleep in one go😬
