I thought about writing you a poem
Just to introduce you to everyone as a miserable year
But then—I suppose—I paused to think
And remembered there was actually some good in you, too
At first, it was nothing but despair and grief;
The days felt like a train running off the tracks
I spent my time counting your months and your days,
Wondering how much more fear could possibly fit inside them
Then, eventually, peace and happiness took over;
My capacity for love grew even larger
I learned quite a bit about myself and how life works
Finding something beautiful even in the middle of the dark
So, I’m saying goodbye tonight
Planning to make my life an absolute firework display
I'll raise a glass to you on your way
As you head toward being forgotten by me
With those first beats of midnight hitting,
Our song will echo through the night
Because the New Year will heal every wound
Bringing even better, brighter days ahead..
