Speaker issues

I’ve run into a bit of a fascinating little glitch lately. I actually dealt with this back when I was running Windows 7, and now that I've upgraded to Windows 10, it seems to have followed me over.

To give you an idea of what’s happening: whenever I start playing some music, a movie, or even jump into a game, the sound from my speakers is hit-or-miss. Sometimes it works perfectly right away, but other times, there's just total silence. My workaround has been to manually slide the volume bar up and down in Windows, which usually wakes them up. Occasionally, the sound will cut out again, and I have to perform that same little volume dance to get it back. Interestingly, I don't experience any of this when I'm using headphones. For context, I'm using a set of Genius 2.1 speakers.

I've already tried the standard troubleshooting steps, like uninstalling the audio drivers and giving the PC a full restart, but nothing has stuck. I’m planning to test the speakers on my girlfriend's laptop later this week just to see if the issue persists there; honestly, it feels more like a hardware quirk than a software bug.

Currently, they are plugged directly into the green audio jack on the back of my tower. If anyone has any insight or advice, I’d love to hear it. It sounds like such a silly, trivial thing to struggle with, but I haven't quite cracked the code yet! 👏

Why don't you try plugging in some other speakers to your PC if you can borrow them? It reeks of a speaker issue, so you might as well rule that out entirely.

I think I’ll head out and pick up those speakers tomorrow so I can finally run some tests... honestly, I was mostly expecting the whole thing to be one of those situations where you realize, "Well, that was a silly way to handle it, but hey, at least it's xxxx."😁

Give this a shot: click the sound icon in the bottom right corner of your taskbar, right-click it, go to playback devices, then select properties for your speakers, hit enhancements, and check disable all enhancements.

I’m going to give this a shot once I get back home later today, and then I'll let you all know how it goes. I actually picked up some new speakers as well, so I'm looking forward to testing out some different audio profiles.

You make a fair point. I actually lost my cool a bit earlier today and tested them on my girlfriend's laptop, and now she's reporting that the audio cuts in and out randomly too. So, there's no denying it. I'm planning to take everything down to Best Buy this coming Monday, along with a detailed written explanation of exactly what happened and when. I learned the hard way that it’s much better to spell everything out clearly for them; otherwise, they tend to send things back claiming "it works fine on our end," which we all know is rarely the case.

Tudududu, that familiar sound is back.

I recently swapped out my speakers for a fresh set, but after just two months, I’m running into the exact same headache. I was right in the middle of a session of Diablo 3 yesterday when the audio just completely cut out. Interestingly, if I nudge the volume up or down using the scroll wheel on my Logitech keyboard, the sound suddenly kicks back in. I’m starting to suspect there might be an issue with my motherboard, especially since the headphone jack on the front of my PC case works perfectly without any interruptions at all.

Does anyone know of a way I can troubleshoot this effectively, besides buying yet another pair of speakers just to test them for a few days? 😁

Try plugging the speakers into the front jack and the headphones into the back, then let me know how it goes... Honestly, I doubt it's an issue with your motherboard.

It looks like some batches just have crappy electronics that start failing. And there's a massive chance those defective units end up in markets like ours 😬 unfortunately... Reach out to Genius, send them a few Links to similar complaints, and make sure they know this isn't your first rodeo. Demand a local replacement so you don't have to deal with shipping this junk halfway across the country...

You should reach out to Genius; just send them a few Links to similar reviews and mention that this is already your second set. Ask if they can authorize a local exchange through Best Buy so you aren't stuck shipping these off to some warehouse halfway across the country...

Oh wow, I had no idea; I feel a bit silly for not realizing that sooner. I was actually starting to feel pretty embarrassed about having to drag these speakers back to Best Buy for a second time with the exact same issue 😁😁😁😁

Well, I am still under warranty, so my plan is to draft an email including links to these complaints and demand another replacement. It is incredibly frustrating to realize I'm getting a second pair of speakers only to face the same headache within a few months... Honestly, it makes me want to just give up on this model entirely and see if there are better options in this price range.

I am currently weighing whether I should just toss an extra $200 $133 toward a different brand or simply ask for a full refund. That 2.1 setup was actually quite convenient because I could tuck the subwoofer on the floor and keep the two speakers on my desk for a perfect little setup 😲🙂😁

Honestly, this speaker deal is pretty garbage. I don't even know what to say. You can't find a decent 2.1 system for more than $133 at this price point. I think Logitech has a model like this, but they're usually way pricier...

You'll end up in the "real" audio territory pretty fast because once you cross that $100 mark, you're playing in the big leagues. It feels stupid to blow a ton of cash on "gamer" speakers. That’s just my take, though—assuming you aren't buying them strictly for gaming or needing massive soundstages and crazy effects. 😬

I’ve actually decided I’m just going to pick up a new computer at Best Buy, which frees up my budget to finally invest in a high-quality headset instead. It honestly feels a bit redundant to have a dedicated hi-fi setup sitting right next to my PC when I'd only be using it because of someone else's stubborn insistence on listening to music via USB. 😁
