Got caught doing just under 80 in a school zone this past Saturday.
What kind of fine am I looking at, and is an appeal even worth the effort? What’s the realistic outcome if I contest it?
Not exactly sitting on a mountain of cash here...
Clean record so far; no tickets in the last two years.
Thanks.

Based on what you said, "just under 80," you've probably got a buffer of about 6.2 miles/h, which puts you closer to 😂 "just under 70." 😂

Here’s how the fines usually break down:
0-6.2 miles/h over the limit $100
10-20 $500
20-30 $1,000 + one point
30-50 $2,000 + two points
50+ $5,000-$15,000 (court order)
Keep in mind, they'll be calculating based on that "just under 70" figure.

If you have a totally clean driving record, you might be able to contest it and ask for a simple warning instead!!

So, if I get a ticket, can I actually appeal for just a warning? I was definitely under 80—I clocked myself at about 78 right before hitting the speed trap. Also, is there any truth to the rumor that state troopers don't start filming until you hit 44 miles/h?
Thanks.

Those speed traps film "every speed"—it’s just a matter of what range they have the sensors set to capture!!

If the limit is, say, 37 miles mph, they won't snap a photo (meaning, they won't be programmed to) anything under 70!
Since 60 plus a 6.2 miles mph buffer puts you at 44 miles mph, you won't even get a ticket unless you're pushing past 70 🙂
Man, it's wild!!!
