SSL error?

Hey everyone.

After spending what felt like an eternity installing and configuring Windows XP, just when I thought I was finally done—a new headache popped up. Some sites using the HTTPS protocol simply won't load. For instance, The Pirate Bay isn't working on either Internet Explorer or Chrome. I have Avast installed, but even after disabling it, nothing changed. In Chrome, I get this error whenever I try to access The Pirate Bay. Everything works perfectly fine on my laptop and my desktop running Windows. I even tried turning off the firewall, but no luck there.

Anyone know what's causing this?

I gave it a shot. It didn't work. 😬 There's definitely some bullshit going on with the certificates and Windows XP.

EDIT - Well, Robert Rodriguez2, turns out you were wrong. The BIOS time is spot on.

If the timing checks out, you’re either looking at a self-signed certificate or the site is still running on SSL v3. Google killed support for that in Chrome once the "POODLE" vulnerability hit

Honestly, every single site using SSL that I’ve stumbled upon works just fine. The only outlier is TPB. How do I deal with this self-signed certificate issue—basically, how do I bypass it? This PC isn't mine and I couldn't care less if bypassing this opens up some vulnerabilities for hackers; I just need TPB to work.

Maybe give this a shot:

Right-click the Chrome icon

Hit Properties

Find the target line, then just tack this onto the very end: --ssl-version-fallback-min=ssl3

It should look something like chrome.exe --ssl-version-fallback-min=ssl3 at the end... let me know if that actually works.

Move all those quotes to the end and just leave one space after the .exe

Edit, I just booted up my VM since I'm not on Windows right now, so I was definitely talking out of turn. My bad. The flag should be after the quotes, but The Pirate Bay is actually working for me

Look, they are double quotes, I'm not crazy. For some reason, they're showing up as single quotes in this warning window. The addresses—this, that and anything else using HTTPS that links back to The Pirate Bay. 😁

Yeah, I know it works for you—it works for me on machines running Windows 7 and Windows 10 too. But Windows XP is acting up. It’s tripping over SSL certificates for some reason I can't quite pin down.

It works on my end. Have you tried the .vg extension yet?

Edit: Honestly, I haven't had Windows XP running on my VM for a while now. I could try testing it, but I really don't feel like downloading and installing the whole thing right this second...

That issue popped up on an old PC because the BIOS date and time were totally off 😳

I did. I even know how to set the shortcut attribute. Still nothing. It just doesn't work. 😬

So, I think I finally nailed it. It all comes down to the certificates. Firefox brings its own little bundle of certs along for the ride, but Chrome just leans on whatever the OS provides. Since most sites have migrated over to ECDSA certificates now, you can't verify them on Windows XP. Back when XP was actually relevant, 😁 there were hardly any of those around
