Suggestion: Like/Dislike button for posts

Why is everyone suddenly obsessing over Facebook??
It was present on various forums long before its sudden rise to prominence...

What a joke. A forum is meant to be a place for actual discussion and debate, not just a playground for clicking likes. 🙄

It’s a classic move: you craft a little masterpiece that says, "Oh boy, I am just *so* thrilled about this post (not)," and then you proceed to lay out a perfectly reasoned argument for why it’s actually nonsense.

That’s just how things work on this forum, baby. That’s just the way it is!🙂

I honestly have no idea what the vibe is over on Facebook—I don't really use that thing myself—but I absolutely can't stand seeing it pop up on online forums. To me, it feels like this weird little tool for an egotrip or just mindless flattery. And don't even get me started on "liking" things; that’s actually even worse than those posts where someone quotes half a meter of your text just to write "I agree." Sometimes they don't even bother with words; they just drop a single encouraging smiley face. They might as well just write, "I don't actually have an opinion of my own, but yours seems like a decent enough option to go with," though I suppose even that requires far too many keystrokes for them.

But this whole "like/dislike" feature on a post... now that is just a whole new level of absurdity. It often feels like a symbiotic relationship between two empty suits: you've got the person who likes something because they lack any original thoughts, and then there's the person boosting their own ego by collecting likes from people exactly like that. You really have to be quite dim-witted to find satisfaction in a like like that.
And my absolute favorites are the ones who try to use it as a logical argument in a debate, saying stuff like, "Look how many likes I have on this post, how can you even argue with me when you have fewer than I do?"
It's just tragic. He's being cheered on by a hundred incompetent people, and he actually has the nerve to be proud of it....

Please, I beg of you, don't bring that nonsense onto the forum.

Clearly, the trolls aren't feeling this. Now we need to hear from some actually constructive members like me and a few others on the Forum to see what the real consensus is. Personally, I'm all for 👍

Well, before Facebook arrived, we already had those like/unlike posts, and many forums still offer that option, so—it really isn't anything new.

LOL, you're being optimistic. 😂 Certain issues on this forum have persisted for years, and they could be fixed in under an hour (like the text color menu in the posting form). If these problems have been around for years, I think it’s truly—to put it mildly—optimistic to expect any new features on the forum.

Why bother adding new bells and whistles when the stuff we already have doesn't even work properly?

I was just wondering if people on this Forum actually get karma from clicking the Thumbs up or Thumbs down abuse buttons? And I guess, would it be possible to let someone click either one once per day for any given user? 🤣
