Taxol experiences

My mom is about to start Taxol therapy. I’m trying to get a better idea of how the treatment is actually administered and what the recovery process looks like—specifically regarding things like nausea or pain levels.

My mom actually went through Taxol herself! I remember how she had to spend such long stretches just lying there because the infusion had to drip in so slowly. They always gave her premedication first to help prevent any nausea. The whole process usually took about four or five hours.
I’m not entirely sure which specific diagnosis you all are dealing with, but along with the Taxol, she was also taking another heavy-duty medication orally.
She didn't deal with vomiting at all, though; she actually tolerated the treatment quite well, and her blood work stayed pretty steady since she was taking every immune booster imaginable!
However, looking back now after everything she went through, she’s struggling with peripheral neuropathy—she deals with pain in her hands, sensitivity to the cold, and tingling sensations, and she has unfortunately lost vision in one eye.

Thanks for getting back to me! My dad is dealing with lung cancer—he finished 6 cycles of Gemzar, but honestly, it didn't seem to be doing much. He recently developed a metastasis in his kidney, so he had one round of radiation and now he's supposed to start Taxol. That's why I'm asking—does anyone know what the side effects are like, or how well it actually works? Is it pretty effective?

Yeah, by the way—has anyone else here heard of BIOCIL? I think it’s a medication from Mexico that’s supposed to help patients dealing with really aggressive forms of cancer.

My mom went through Taxol about two years ago (and I think she’ll likely need it again since it worked the best). Like someone mentioned, it’s administered really slowly, but I guess they told us that going slower might help with the nausea and vomiting, at least while she's getting it or right after. Aside from that very first cycle, she didn't deal with any vomiting or nausea at all. She’d just feel pretty weak for the first 2 or 3 days, and then things would settle down. Also, when she does her Taxol cycle, she has to stay at the hospital for two nights just for monitoring (at least that's how it works at the clinic where she gets treated).
Anyway, she has bone metastases, and before the Taxol she was getting alongside something else (I can't recall the name), she would have received Aredia...

My mom is currently on Taxol for breast cancer, and I’m curious how long they usually administer it when Herceptin isn't an option? It seems to be working quite well for her so far!

It was pretty much the same thing for my mom. She’s dealing with HER2+ breast cancer that has spread to her bones. At first, she was on Taxol and Aredia for the bone issues, then they switched her to just Herceptin + Zomet to help with the bones. Since that wasn't really doing enough, she moved on to vinorelbine + herceptin. Even though those two together are supposed to be great for those bone metastases, the doctors say it’s just not working quite well enough. I guess they'll probably put her back on Taxol + Aredia for a bit...

Olivia Cook how is your mom holding up lately?? is she dealing with much pain? I'm curious about how they actually caught the metastases—was it through an X-ray or something else? Is she constantly going through rounds of chemo right now? Also, is she taking anything by mouth, like Aromasin, Arimidex, or something along those lines??
My own mom actually isn't a candidate for Herceptin because of the specific type of HER expression she has, so it wouldn't even work for her; it’s really only effective for certain specific subtypes.
And honestly, people say that even Herceptin isn't some kind of miracle cure for everyone...

The whole chemo regimen depends entirely on the type of cancer you're fighting—so far, Paclitaxel has been showing some really solid results for gynecological cancers, specifically adenocarcinomas. Personally, I was on Paclitaxel for the first time back when I was originally diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and now—eight years later—here I am, back on Paclitaxel again after a recurrence in my pelvis and lungs. Honestly, the side effects from Paclitaxel are pretty brutal, and I can't say for certain if anything specific actually helped me push through them—even though I feel like I’ve tried just about everything. I guess the best thing you can do for yourself, or for your loved ones, is to try and keep a positive mindset while doing whatever you can to boost your immune system... though that looks different for everyone, obviously.
I'm pulling hard for all of us to get through this treatment successfully...
