Technical Issue

I am at a loss as to what the underlying issue might be here.

It appears to me that my integrated network card might be bottlenecking the entire system's performance.
Is such a scenario even technically plausible?

To make matters worse, whenever I attempt to switch over to an external adapter, I lose all internet connectivity entirely.

It’s going to be pretty tough for anyone to jump in and help you out here since you haven't really given us any details—what's your actual setup looking like? Which version of Windows are you running? Also, when did this start happening? Have you tried doing a clean reinstall of your network card drivers yet? And just a thought—when you plug in an external card, did you make sure to install its specific drivers so you can actually get back online?

I’ve already attempted a clean reinstallation of my drivers,
but I’m still hitting a wall. The computer runs fine under normal conditions, but the entire system crashes the moment I plug in the cable for the integrated network card.
To make matters worse, I have an external network adapter on hand, but for some reason, it won't establish any actual internet connectivity!

People have run into similar headaches with their USB ports, so there’s a chance you might be dealing with something similar on the LAN port. Did you happen to install the drivers for the new network card yet? You didn't really give us any specific details to go on.

I went ahead and installed the drivers for my new network card, but it's just sitting there doing nothing. I can't get an internet connection to work at all.

It’s entirely possible that your motherboard has fried several ports, perhaps including a PCI slot and a few USB connections. A friend of mine dealt with the exact same thing—a lightning strike hit his place and completely toasted his hardware. You might want to try testing it with a different motherboard or just pick up a USB wireless adapter to get back online.

So you're talking about fried USB ports and maybe even the PCI, and then your big solution is to buy a USB Wi-Fi adapter? 🤦🤦

Learn how to read a quote. And even if he does buy one, is it really a problem to have a spare if the motherboard is already dead? I never actually told him to buy anything.

Ever since those folks over at AT&T started cranking up the speeds, things haven't exactly been running smoothly
Since the motherboard is getting pretty old, you're better off just investing in a completely new unit

If you're dealing with something like a Socket 775 or an A2/A1 chip, I’d suggest borrowing one from someone who has extras lying around first. Wouldn't it be better to verify the hardware works before you go spending money unnecessarily?

It’s not exactly rare for an integrated LAN card to kick the bucket, but it’s definitely strange that this brand-new one is acting up too.

It would be a huge help if I could just borrow a wireless USB adapter from someone to test things out.
