From July 5th through the 10th, starting at 8:00 PM, there's a film series running at the local community center organized by the French-American Alliance (or some similar group)

The main thing to remember is that they're showing Tess of the d'Urbervilles (Nikki Kinski) on Tuesday 👍

Tomorrow, we’ve got the Great Adventure starring Louis de Funes🙏

I still think that one by Neil Jordan holds up pretty well. And what about The Gambler? Has anyone actually sat through that one?

I met her... in a biblical sense. Twice. But even now, that melancholy smile of hers haunts me. Nasty Nastia, where are you, love?

And the movie? Honestly, it blows Chasing the Wind!

You really can't fault Tom for "betraying the premise"—every bit of tension is captured perfectly...
More coming soon. I have to run now.🙄

nah, not that one. I mean Tess of the d'Urbervilles (Thomas Hardy, Roman Polanski)

Yeah, having that surname really was her undoing... total disaster. Anyway, I watched the series ages ago and honestly? It was way better than the movie version. I caught it on PBS during one of those late-night marathons where they just roll one series after another all night long...

It runs about three hours and ten minutes. There’s always someone in the audience grumbling—like, "Okay, we're leaving now"—even though the theatrical cuts are usually a bit tighter. I honestly can't remember how long the cinema version lasted.

The real question is—should she have confessed?

Didn't Polanski essentially "tell" the audience—much like how John Ford used to say, "When I have something to say, I send a telegram!"—through that scene where Tessin can't find the letter from Leigh Lawson, while Tess is bathed in sunlight... suggesting it was all a blessing?!

It has come to my attention that I might just be annoying everyone who was grumbling about the runtime while walking out of the theater yesterday
—but honestly, if three hours is simply too much for you to handle, why on earth did you choose to see a movie that lasts three hours in the first place?!

Polanski can take even the most grounded, realistic scene and turn it into pure fantasy—just by tweaking the camera angle ever so slightly...

Tess........ they trimmed him down quite a bit, maybe by about 15 minutes if I had to guess. I went ahead despite that massive downpour; near Tuškanac, the water was basically knee-deep
every single scene where Kinskica and Firth were making out was just... painful

That scene with the top hat—it was such a clear omen for anyone who hadn't actually read the book... pure suspense... 🙄

For those of you who have actually sat down and read the book—do you happen to know why Polanski chose to ignore the fact that Tess wears a red wreath in her hair during that opening dance scene, while all the other girls are sporting white ones?
In Hardy’s original writing, isn't that immediate foreshadowing of tragedy, a subtle hint at her being different and perhaps even cursed? So why, in Polanski’s vision, does she wear a white wreath just like everyone else?

By the way, I was truly irritated by the people streaming out of the theater making comments like, "kakv glup kraj!"... Honestly, if you absolutely require a happy ending, why not just go watch some cheesy American romantic comedies instead?

Did you actually tell her, or was it just something you were thinking? I can totally picture the scene playing out. 😉

goldberry, hmm, you’re really putting my memory to the test here—it’s been ages since I last saw that movie—but didn't Nastasja wear a red skirt? Or was it something else altogether...🙄

Maybe you're thinking of Dallas? Pretty sure she was rocking red in that one. 🙂
