The Apartment

Last night I finally sat down and watched the movie...
It was truly phenomenal... maybe I was just being a bit too emotional while watching it, but aside from her role in Small, this is easily one of Monica Bellucci's best performances in my eyes.
I've probably seen about 50 French films by now, but this one definitely left a lasting impression on me.

The plot is so original, the pacing is tight and dynamic, the characters... honestly, everything is great, and even the soundtrack is pretty solid!

A total ten out of ten.

It’s been forever since I saw this movie—back when it first dropped—but man, I was hooked from the jump. That phone booth scene, those red shoes with the black tights... unforgettable.
I still remember how gorgeous that apartment was, too. And Roman Bohringer was absolutely incredible. Such a wild plot and an ending that just sticks with you.

One of the best American films out there.

"The Apartment" is such a phenomenal film... honestly, one of my absolute favorites! Monica Bellucci is incredible, but in this particular movie, she truly just completely outshines Roman Bohringer.

That's true... the other woman in the movie might actually be the standout... I guess Monica didn't quite shine as much as she could have.

Roman Bohringer... you honestly can't decide if he's a worse actor or just a better one... it's a total dead heat between those two impressions of him.
At the same time, this is easily Monica's best role by far (how could anyone say otherwise?), the ending isn't some tired cliché, and I find it fascinating that every single time I've been to the theater (and I've seen this film three times now), the audience is practically jumping out of their seats, rooting for these two to finally reunite...

Wicker Park is just gross!

This is hands down my absolute favorite romance flick. Bohringer was honestly incredible in this, and the whole thing has that perfect sense of mystery you just need in a love story. I totally agree that this is Monica Bellucci's best performance, by far. Cassel is just a total icon, as per usual, and the movie hits me so close to home that I always find myself associating it with that classic Balašević track "Branislav."

The way he’s just waiting for Park, watching her from the shadows, that shoe salesman bit, or that scene where he wakes up next to Bohringer instead of Bellucci... it all just sticks with you.

HBO should really bring this one back; I think they aired it about four years ago.

The DVD finally hit the shelves at the local Best Buy, so I went ahead and picked up a copy. It doesn't come with any fancy bonus features or anything, but honestly, that doesn't really bother me...

Grabbed a copy and watched it with my wife too. The cinematography is incredible. A really solid romantic thriller...

Am I really the bad guy for watching Wicker Park first?

So, I just sat down and watched this movie again this morning—my third time diving into it in the last seven years... and honestly, it still stands as the most romantic film I've ever seen. It’s got this specific, lingering atmosphere, like being in Paris at Night during a cold autumn or winter stretch. Monica Bellucci looks absolutely stunning here, easily her most radiant role to date, just glowing with that effortless beauty. And Roman Bohringer? He’s definitely got "it"; I certainly wouldn't go so far as to call him unattractive, quite the opposite, actually. The plot itself is incredibly gripping and well-executed, even if it leans into a few tropes here and there (you know, like the whole burned goods in the bathtub thing or the way Lisa meets her end)... The whole experience feels like this bittersweet, nightmarish dream. The way the scenes jump around and reference what’s already passed really drives home that feeling of the joy of memory...

Anyway, that's my two cents...

And why did Bellucci have to die? What exactly was the director trying to achieve with that choice?

I haven't seen it yet, and I'm honestly just waiting for the right moment to catch it somewhere. I only got interested after *Wicker Park* came out and everyone immediately jumped to the conclusion that the French original was way better. That’s actually why I skipped the remake entirely.
Yeah, I can only imagine Josh Hartnett stepping in for Cassel.🤣

I think I might be the only one who actually enjoyed Wicker Park. To be honest, I’m much more drawn to the younger, attractive cast. When I have to sit there staring at an elderly Monica Bellucci (let's be real: she's not exactly a powerhouse actress) paired with a visually striking but deeply unsettling Cassel, it honestly just ruins my mood. 😬
I also hear people complaining about how the movie ends, but personally, I think the end of Wicker is absolutely perfect. I really don't get people who gravitate toward tragic endings; why does every great love story have to be so miserable? :P) Plus, you have the stunning Diane Kruger, who is impossible to top for me. Add in the flawless music—like Coldplay - The Scientist—and a killer soundtrack featuring "Flowers in December", "Strange & Beautiful (I'll Put a Spell on You)", "I Miss You Now", and "Maybe Tomorrow"...
I know, I know, I'm being totally mainstream, but hey, if it makes me happy, I'm happy. It's what the eyes want to see...

Look, I get it—they might not be top-tier, A-list actors, but honestly? I much prefer them. At least with them, I feel like I can actually connect with what's happening on screen. 😛 ,
I honestly don't mind at all if we see things differently; that’s just how it goes. It's perfectly normal.😉 .
In my honest opinion, I just wanted to say that Monica isn't actually a particularly great actress, especially when I see her paired up with that dear little deviant. 👎 I don't find them particularly easy on the eyes, and honestly, I’m just not feeling it. Even if we assume the quality is top-notch, it’s simply not my cup of tea—I just can't bring myself to sit through it.
Alright, I’ll admit it right off the bat—I sound a bit like an MTV generation kid. It’s a flaw of mine, I know, but I’ve always had a massive soft spot for those corny, lame, overly cheesy, teen-romance, indie, geeky, weird little movies. Honestly, if a film hits that specific vibe and the soundtrack is killer, I’m sold. I can't claim to be objective about it; that's just how I am.🙂
