I know there’s already a thread about ski jumping, but honestly, the New Year’s tournament feels like its own entire universe apart from the rest of the sport—so I figured, if this thing doesn't deserve its own dedicated topic, nothing does.

Seriously, screw everything else, because this is hands down my favorite sporting event of the year!!! If there’s ever a time when that old cliché about "everyone is a winner" actually makes sense, it’s right here. I mean, we all know they spend half the night partying in their hotels—probably having more fun than some random socialite at a Hamptons beach house in July—but then those crazy guys get out there and jump during the day!!! And man, do they fly!!!

I don't know how anyone can look away. Kuziti, I know it looks insane and is basically boring to some people, but I just can't help myself...

And what about New Year's lunch? Would it even feel like a holiday meal if we weren't listening to the background noise of a Becky concert (ta-ra-ram, ta-ra-ram, ta-ra-ram-ta-tam) mixed with a drunk Cvitkovic rambling on about which intoxicated jumper is flying right now, where he ran into them last night, or trying to guess the distance of a jump (he’s usually off by like ten feet...)?

You’ve got turkey, roast lamb, fine wine on the table... the whole family gathered around... and meanwhile, they’re out there jumping!!! It’s pure bliss...

Please, join me in this thread so we can celebrate all the wins of my (and your!) idols!

Cvita ????

I don't really follow the jumps, but does Cvita even cover anything related to skiing?? Even if it includes the jumping part. :think.

Unfortunately for us, yes, they do.

You know, just rambling about which tipsy kangaroo he ran into last night and trying to calculate how high its jump might be—guessing an average of maybe ten feet or something?

😂 🤣

hehehe, you're totally right...

My interest in sports has kind of fizzled out over the last few years, so I haven't really been following the annual New Year's tour like I used to, but who knows, maybe I'll actually tune in this year...

Thanks a ton, Joe, for that classy intro to The Avengers, but let’s be real here—who actually cares about the winner? To me, this whole competition is just The thing... it’s not really about some individual glory trip for any of them.

Back during that era when the Japanese team was totally dominating, the only time I actually loved seeing a win was when Smith took it—because man, that guy seriously had nerves of steel!!!! Watching him stay glued to those skis while he just flew, and flew, and flew... it felt endless...

As for whether it'll be Ahonen or Hannawald or Malysz (who, by the way, is such an incredibly humble and down-to-earth guy!), I don't really care... I'm just happy to sit back and enjoy watching them do their thing...

Wait, am I seeing this right? Is the first round today starting at 4:30 AM, and then the second one even later!?!?!! Awesome, late-night jumps!!!!!! WAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay Coooooooooooooool
