So, I just finished this incredibly strange movie, and I’m really curious to know who else here has seen it. Given that it's actually based on a true story, what are your thoughts?
The whole thing caught me completely off guard—even the cinematography was unexpected. I remember seeing someone describe it as beautiful "romance porn"—you have these bright, sunny days contrasted with these innocent girls getting lost in the wilderness;
I'd love to hear if anyone has any deeper insight or even just a quick take on it. Any and all comments are welcome! Thanks!😎

Ronald Morales51: Given that it's actually a true story??

🤔 I’m not entirely convinced about that specific detail. You might want to double-check that online. 😉

The whole movie caught me off guard, especially the way they shot it.

It has this dreamy atmosphere, yet somehow feels absolutely chilling. 🙂

It’s like, if you follow the book, nothing makes sense to me; I mean, the cinematography is absolutely stunning—I was genuinely blown away—but I can't wrap my head around the meaning. What actually happened? Or rather, did anything even happen at all?

The movie is an adaptation of the novel. In the original version of the book, the author actually spells out exactly what happened, but she eventually decided to cut that part out. If you’re dying to know the truth behind the mystery, your best bet is to hunt down a newer edition of the book—or maybe that specific chapter was released as a standalone piece, I can't be entirely sure—otherwise, just do some digging online.
As far as the film goes, it’s fantastic. It works much better as a period piece capturing a specific slice of the American landscape through its characters—basically a snapshot of the old frontier spirit from a century ago—than it ever would have worked if it had tried to solve the mystery head-on. It’s about the setting, not the puzzle.

So, if you're planning a rewatch, or if you're recommending it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet: sit back, relax & enjoy 🙂

Well, if people are still watching it, then it clearly has staying power, I suppose.
As you all mentioned, it’s just such a visually stunning film.

😁 Let's be honest—having attractive women on screen definitely helps boost the ratings
plus you've got that whole sense of mystery mixed with a killer soundtrack 😁

classic cinema rules

I’m actually starting to side more with Lawrence Booth2 here,
if we're talking about classic chick flicks, you've got movies like Mean Girls, She's All That, or Bring It On.
But what we're looking at now is something else entirely.

Really great movie...
Steven Spielberg is actually one of my favorite directors, so it’s no surprise I enjoyed this one so much...

Definitely recommend! 👍

I've actually got the English subtitles right here. If you think having them will make it easier to follow along while you listen, just let me know and I'll send them over. Besides, there isn't a massive amount of dialogue in this movie anyway 😬

🤣

I’m still laughing at Roger Allen3's comment here...

Personally, I think this movie is fantastic. It nails that sense of mystery, and the cinematography and the way they capture the great outdoors is really impressive (kind of like how they did in Roeg's "The Revenant"). I can still picture those cross-fades accompanied by the flute music... it was beautiful, truly beautiful.
