I was thinking about this today after watching some old clips of legendary coaches. There is such a fine line between a leader who commands respect through expertise and one who just tries to "rally the troops" with speeches. It feels like every single season, there's always that one guy in the locker room who decides he’s the true voice of the squad, and it always seems to signal that something is fundamentally broken with the leadership at the top.
In my experience watching different teams, once the players start feeling like they need to self-police or offer their own "critiques" of the coaching staff, the chemistry is already shot. You can have all the talent in the world, but if the hierarchy starts blurring, you’re looking at a disaster waiting to happen. It’s less about the strategy on the field and more about whether the guys actually trust the person holding the clipboard.
Do you think a team can actually recover once the players start publicly questioning the authority of the head coach, or is the season effectively over at that point?
