I was watching some old game highlights last night and it got me thinking about how much we obsess over finding that one specific player to "unlock" a star. It feels like every time a team has a generational talent or a playmaker who can see the whole floor, the fans immediately start demanding a specific type of specialist to balance things out.

Don't get me wrong, chemistry is huge. You need that spacing and those specific skill sets to make a system actually work. But I sometimes wonder if we over-index on the "perfect fit" theory. Sometimes a team just needs grit, or defensive intensity, or just more depth, but the narrative always settles on needing a specific shooter or a certain type of athlete to make the superstar shine.

It’s like we treat players like puzzle pieces rather than actual human beings with different styles. If you keep trying to build a perfect machine, do you lose the unpredictability that actually wins games?

Do you think teams focus too much on finding a "complementary" player instead of just building a cohesive unit?
